Random 3 for July 10, 2022 – Customer service, energy, memories

I’m shortening it up today! Not a lot going on around here that’s worth noting and see second item.

Time I’ll never get back – My email went wonky this week. I couldn’t access it on any device so that had to be a cable provider issue. As one who hates phone calls (long queues, hard to understand accents, etc.) I looked for the chat feature. The website was full of marketing stuff. Buy this, buy that. Finally at the bottom right corner (where you would not notice it) I found the chat icon. It was maybe a half inch square while all the marketing stuff was billboard size. I clicked. It said I was 3rd in line with a 2-to-5-minute wait. Ok, not too bad.  Four minutes later it asked if I was still there. I said yes and it updated me to 4th in line (I’m not sure how that works?) and a 5-minute wait. Overall, it took about 12 minutes and I got Eon. I told him what was happening and what I had done (multiple reboots, turning off, yada, yada, yada). He said that someone probably hacked my email account; was sending spam from it; and it was frozen. I had to CALL to reset my password. I don’t know why I had to call because it’s not like they could see that it was really me any more than he could. I called. There were multiple public service messages. If you are poor, you can get internet access free if you are willing to jump through hoops. They have new offers I may be interested in. Just give me a bypass number to circumvent this! Finally, I got a person. She took my info and said she was transferring me to the “email division.” Yeowza, email has its own division. Cool! I got there and explained (for the third time) what was going on. I also said the first guy said I needed a password change. She said no, they were having issues with email. (They need to tell Eon that.) She filled out a work order and said they’d call in 24 to 48 hours. They didn’t call but the next morning my email was working. Overall time spent, an hour (which wasn’t as bad as other calls but still…). I wish Eon had just said wait until tomorrow morning to see if the issue cleared out. BTW the beloved husband (same account) had no issues.

What’s up with that? – After a very productive week or two, I’ve sunk back in the “no energy” zone. I don’t know how it happens. One day I’m all energizer bunny and the next, I’m a dead rabbit. I know I complain about this a lot, but it hits me like a sack of potatoes and I can’t figure out the root cause. It couldn’t possibly be aging.

Nostalgia – This is the time of the year we would be planning our beach trip. We haven’t been there in a few years. I’m no longer a fan of sand in my private parts and paying inflated prices for an ice cream cone but the best part was always that I could read almost continuously. There wasn’t a weed that needed to be pulled or a bathroom to clean. Just sit and read. I miss that. I also miss the “right off the boat” seafood. Maybe one of these years we’ll make another trip. We used to go with our siblings, but they have all aged out of the trip. The drive is overwhelming and so are the health issues. I’m so glad we did it while we could.

  1. I also read a lot on our vacations. It’s thousands of miles to reach a beach, however, so we head to the mountains. The first thing I always seem to pack – the most critical thing, is my bag of books!

  2. I hate when you need to call a company and you rattle off your whole story, then they say after you’ve finished “I can’t help you, so I’ll transfer you.” I always get the feeling they knew from the get-go they couldn’t help me and they let me rattle on ….

  3. I have pretty much quit calling help desks. They don’t know much more than me, and I have no intention of reloading Windows. Usually, I can reboot the monster or just wait a while and it works. I didn’t know there is a WordPress email account. Where is it? No telling what is in mine if I have one.

  4. Sorry about the email hassles, but glad it was fixed with a minimum of hassle. Oh – beach vacations! I miss them too. We went a lot when I was a kid, but I haven’t been on one for a long time. I love being able to just relax and read all day too. Or just go for long walks, or just sit and stare at the ocean. Sigh.

    Trying to straighten out internet but phone – UGH. Wasted time and having to repeat over and over the issue to people you are transferred to. Sometimes email messes happen when the provider are switching your account/service to a different server. We always asked to be on the one where they don’t dump the questionable and spam accounts….that you have to ask that is nuts…but it often solves the bounce back emails and not coming in emails.
    Ditto and with you on being exhausted by the media, “news”, and people’s attitudes in general. At least you have cats to help with that.

  6. Your ‘What’s up with that” paragraph has been what I have been struggling with the last year. I really think for me it is depression. I am so over the Covid thing. I am exhausted by the continued news and warnings and bad news about the new strains. I can’t find a comfortable new normal. It’s exhausting. I have a beach 5 minutes from me and for the first time ever I can’t find comfort there…. it’s too dang HOT! I am glad you worked out your email issue… tech stuff is exhausting, too.
    Exhausting is my word today I guess 🙂

    • I think it’s partly the barrage of bad news and the fear that it will get worse. Just as the virus was settling down somewhat the Ukraine war started. I may not be personally affected but I am emotionally affected. They are people just like us, going about their lives and now it’s all gone because of a guy who wants more power. I fear we’ll see that here. One of our candidates for governor in the fall has stated publicly that he believes the governor has the power to reverse any election. I could go on but then we’d both be in a worse spot. Perhaps the miracle is that we have good days when we can get something done.

      • Yes, definitely the war in Ukraine… our economy and a president that I think is not all there. I read an article yesterday afternoon in the NYT about a teacher that survived Uvalde and it was terrifying. I should have clicked out and not read it. It’s amazing to me that we all are still standing with everything that has happened the last two years. I am thankful for the gift of days when there is joy and a clear head to get things accomplished.

    • Sometimes the person on the first level help desk doesn’t know much more than you do. It’s first stage triage, then going on to second stage triage. Sometimes even third stage before you finally get someone who knows something.

  7. Maybe something you’re eating is causing problems. I am so not a phone person. I never have been. And no one ever calls back when they say they will. They just never call back. Pain in the booty. Hope your week gets better.

  8. I have an old email account that is so full of spam that to log in and check it, I have to change the password on a daily basis. I’ve transitioned 99% of everything to another account, but it annoys the heck out of me that they can’t get spam blockers that work which results in my having to abandon the account. No chat available, an from the pages I’ve read, those that call get hung up for 1-2 hours with nothing resolved. Sucks. My husband’s family use to have a yearly summer reunion. It took some organizing and some work, but we always had a great time. Now, everyone has aged out and the next generation is not interested. Sad, but we do have our memories.

    • I occasionally clean out my spam in WordPress and I wish they had a way to do large groups. The max you can do is 20 at a time. When I have 2000 spam comments, it takes a while. You should be able to “empty folder” and do a complete sweep. Us “old ones” who host our reunion are aging too. We have one or two “young’uns” who have hosted but we need more to step up or it will die out. Sometimes the connections with cousins isn’t as strong as the original connection with siblings.

  9. Sorry you had so much trouble with your email and trying to fix it. I hate having to be on hold too. And accents bother me because I know they are outsourcing to other countries. I read somewhere once that I can request and American so I tried that with Comcast and was told it wasn’t an option.

    • I have requested a “better” English speaking person and was transferred to another rep with an equally difficult to understand accent. that’s why I chose the chat feature if I can. The problem there is that I suspect they are doing more than 1 request at a time because there is a lapse time (a long one) between when I answer a question and they respond. Hard to find good customer service. I am astounded at how many websites have no obvious way to contact them if there is a problem.

  10. I go for the chat option first too. Usually I can get what I need and no accents (that I know of anyway). I’m glad you had your trips to the beach with family when you did. Some things like that you think will never end… but they do. Maybe you and hubby can go sometime and just stay a few days. Non-stop reading and ice cream sound pretty good to me!

  11. I am totally sympathetic to what you endured with your email this week. I find it so frustrating when you’re in need of an answer and you have to dig through all of the preliminary questions before getting to the heart of your particular problem. This past week I needed help from the Apple Genius Bar and there was no way on their sites that I could establish an appointment. I had to do it by phone first. When no one could help me they finally granted me an appointment. There was a time you could do this yourself on the site, but no more. I figured they counted on a number of people growing discouraged and just giving up.

    Hope you get some beach time in before too long. I love those vacations!

    • Even finding a phone number on a site is a challenge. I was given the phone number by the chat guy. Everything including “contact us” put me in a FAQ section which had nothing to do with my issue. I wouldn’t mind the triage so much if I didn’t have to listen to a bunch of pitches that don’t apply to me first.

  12. Oh, Eon. Maybe he should consider a name change if nothing else. Glad you finally got your email back. Were you able to at least access it on your phone? No, wait, I just scrolled up and re-read; you said “on any device.” But husband could access his? Very, very weird. The beach is a 15 minute drive from our home. Twice in the last three weeks we’ve been and I’ve gotten mild cases of sunstroke– from sitting in a chair the whole time. I guess I need to wait till fall to go back, which is slightly depressing. – Marty

  13. I’ve been in combat with technology this morning too, Kate.

    I wanted to import photos from our beach trip to the computer to e-mail to my SIL (who hosted us). My computer would not recognize the memory card from my camera.

    I restarted the computer. I reinserted the memory card. I imported the shots. I edited them. I went to e-mail them and two of the four were not accessible from the e-mail I was writing. They were MIA. Just not there. I went into my Photos file. And they were there, just not accessible to the e-mail I was drafting.

    I returned to photos, duplicated those two shots, returned to e-mail, and uploaded them to the e-mail and pressed SEND. Huzzah!

    Meanwhile, I was deleting shots from the memory card when my camera froze. Nothing worked. Lens locked open. No buttons working. Just a frozen image that said “deleting photo.”

    I removed the batteries and reinserted. Nope. The lens remained open that I couldn’t get the camera to do anything. I replaced the batteries. That jumpstart worked for long enough to close the lens. I am recharging the batteries, but perhaps my camera is ready for retirement?

    Bottom line, what should have been a 5 minute import, edit, upload to e-mail turned into an hour of issues.

    NO WONDER WE FEEL LIKE DEAD RABBITS AT TIMES!!!!!

  14. Dead rabbit here also. Kid gave me a cold and I caught another one on my own. Not COVID (6 tests can’t all be wrong, right?), but the post nasal drip, sore throat, and cough.

    The older I get, the more a cold kicks my ass.

  15. No doubt Eon’s bosses ‘forgot’ to tell the people whose job it is about the issues. That used to happen at work all the time with the IT Dept. keeping that little secret…well secret. Grr.

    Since the panDAMNic we’ve probably all had those up and down days. Here’s hoping for more productive days…and LOTS of summertime reading!

  16. I am experiencing the same higher energy days and then days when I’m just flat tired/zonked. Must be age. And you and Dan and Marley and I should plan a beach trip! I love going to the beach for a few days.

  17. Yes, reading on the beach is awesome! But I read at home too…. at night, sleep isn’t needed, right? LOL!
    Ugh on email problems and dealing wtih customer service over the phone. That can drive one insane! Hope this week is smoother for you!

  18. We had a quiet week culminating in two solid days of totally monsoon-like rain. Perfect. All you can do is read (or do housework and I avoided that pitfall like the plague!). Email problems are not fun and getting help with them is even more not-fun. Glad things are OK now!

  19. I absolutely abhor having to do anything by telephone anymore. Between accents that are difficult to understand and language that is difficult for a little person to understand, it gets me frustrated pretty quickly. And then, after repeating yourself to different personnel only to find out that it’s not your issue… I miss the days we could slam the phone receiver down on someone, you know?
