Ain’t no sunshine on this blog today

Computer died. On beloved husband’s and it’s like sharing a toothbrush. Yuck! Will be quiet this week but I can read your prize winning posts on my Kindle. Won’t be able to offer pithy comments until I get new one. There will be posts again. IT folks are the squirreliest. Stay tuned.

  1. Can’t “like” that situation – you have become very high-tech the last year Kate … the car, the new smartphone, the faucet in the sink, now a new computer (and wireless printer to boot). I have the Windows 10 laptop for work, but am still using my Windows 7 as it is like an old shoe. If our computer guy had loaded Office 365 on that Win10 laptop back in 2019 as he was supposed to, I might have used it, but I have to have backup software in case our system goes down and wasn’t going into another room to use this laptop. My house does not have enough plugs. I do virus protection on it every 3-4 weeks and shut it down again. My original Windows 7 laptop, an HP and purchased in 2009 is chugging along. I’ve had luck with HP, but lost a Dell desktop when doing a ServicePack update – it crashed and died. The Windows 10 is a Dell and I asked for an HP, but he ordered a Dell. I don’t like a lot of bells and whistles on anything as you may recall. 🙂

  2. Say it isn’t so. I couldn’t even hit ‘like’ on this. I had a moment over the weekend where mine had a strange message wanting a password I couldn’t even imagine or come up with. After googling for answers, I just shut it down I was so frustrated. When I booted it back up I was able to get out of that message and move on. Phew, I bought a little more time. Good luck fixing or shopping.

  3. My computer lives but keeps asking if I want it to go to Windows 11. I haven’t even figured out 10 yet and dread the learning process. Now my t.v. is dead and ordered a new one. May your new computer work perfectly with no headaches or frustrations. I miss you already.

    • I was getting to a place where I thought I could spent some time on organization for the new kitchen and house. No matter how easy they say it is, it will consume time.I should be glad it’s not in the middle of summer. Maybe.

  4. I would classify this as a full-on disaster! Our personal devices are like a comfortable pair of shoes. Even when the replacement is all shiny and new and pretty, they still feel awkward in the beginning until they are ‘broken-in’. My condolences, Kate. Hope you are up and running on a new comfortable device soon!

  5. Oh, Kate, I can understand your pain! Mine has been acting up a bit but I did some kind of utility clean up on the hard drive (YouTube) can be so helpful and it’s 75% better. Even us “older folks”, who can remember days without computers (I remember being excited when electric typewriters first became a thing!) have adapted to how much easier and quicker they make a lot of things in our lives! My fingers are crossed for you!

    • It’s that initial learning curve. So far in the past few months I’ve had to replace my Fitbit watch and my phone. The phone died, the Fitbit was on it’s last legs. Now this. My Kindle isn’t too old so fingers crossed for that. Amazing how much technology us old coots have!

    • Normally I’d say yes but there are taxes and other things that need to be done. Bad timing but it could be worse. How hard is it to buy a computer. Oh yes, It’s not the buying it’s all the time trying to figure out how to use it.

    • Yes was on phone with “they guy” well over an hour. At the end he said “you need a new one.” Not in the mood to shop for one but then again, I’m never in the mood. Fortunately I can read emails on my Kindle and phone. It’s just so much harder to respond. Who would have thought how necessary it is to be connected.

        • Yes I always overbuy except when I underbuy. It’s a balancing act. At the beginning of computer life I was always upgrading memory or storage or something. Now I rarely do that so either I’m overbuying or I got it right. Or maybe things overall in the computing industry has gotten better.

          • Computers with a ton of storage and memory are so cheap these days that I doubt many people have any need to buy more. With a ton of photos on my computer it isn’t even half full.

            • We are looking at 1T for something (and I can’t remember if that’s tetrabytes or something else) and it’s well under $1K. My first computer (with the cows on the boxes) ran about $2.5K. That was early 90s. Loved the boxes. So did my cats at the time.
