Yes, I did it! – I switched out my new car for a red one. The red one has more features and was a bit more expensive but it’s more like my old one except for the newer safety features that include infernal beeping. It beeps when I’m close to anything or if a leaf drops. At first I thought for sure it was a sign of immediate death but I’m slowly getting used to it. The salesman said I could turn it off but suggested I drive with it on for a while. We’ll see.

At long last – The airbag injury discomfort (that’s the nice way of saying pain) has subsided. It took seven weeks. I still get “stickers” and a tenderness especially when I put a seat belt on. That’s a long time for an accident without severe injuries. I can only imagine how long severe injuries take to heal. Maybe I’ll be able to tell the weather by my rib cage. Oops my ribs are telling me there is a hurricane on the way.

Catching up – Before the pandemic I walked several times a week with a very nice woman who talked me to death. This is pre-coffee so I’m not at my best (that means I’m not nice). Periodically I would complain (to you not to her). I rarely walk at the mall these days preferring my outdoor creek walk in solitude. I haven’t seen her in several months. We used to email occasionally. Her husband has a progressive terminal illness and he wasn’t doing so well. She didn’t want to leave him alone for any amount of time. I finally heard from her this past week. We are walking tomorrow. I am looking forward to having my ears chewed. Maybe I’ll get a double mocha latte afterward.

Should I or shouldn’t I? – We got tickets for our first concert of any sort since the pandemic. It’s indoors at the end of September. I don’t know how life will be then. We’ll suit up in our protective gear and hope for the best. If the virus is very bad locally it will probably be postponed or cancelled yet again. Planning these days is tricky.

Ida’s a comin’ – A family friend had taken their child down to New Orleans to start college about a week ago. With the impending arrival of Hurricane Ida, the students were required to have an evacuation plan. Their plan was to fly back home to weather it out. Fortunately that worked. Our hearts go out to anyone in the path of the storm. New Orleans is one of my favorite towns. The food is to die for and the music too. I’m not a big donut fan but those darn beignets are marvelous! If I lived there I’d weigh 800 pounds! Pass the po boy sammie please!

  3. Cute car! Hope you have a nice walk. I can imagine she needs an outing with what she’s facing, and maybe it will okay since you had a break. Just in case, the double mocha is not a bad idea. 🙂 These storms are just beyond comprehension. My hearts go out to everyone fighting floods and fires.

  4. Well, you stinker, you. Changing your car. Now I’m stuck with the gray car and you have a red one!!! Good for you! Very pretty, too. It’s a shame about all that destruction from Ida, but so far it looks like loss of life was kept to a minimum, fingers crossed.

  6. She’s a beauty! We have all those warnings on our (“newish”) car too, and the salesman suggested we turn them off because they drive HIM crazy. Well, we’re not him. We both like them and have gotten used to all the beeps and warnings. I like not changing lanes and hitting another vehicle, thank you very much. Re: hurricanes. This time of year isn’t for the weak-hearted! – Marty

  9. Your new car is really nice, Kate, and I’m sure you’ll adjust to all the sounds soon. I like the new safety features but they are distracting at first. And what a hopeful sign it is to plan towards a concert. I have a few things on my calendar, too, that I know are still a question. I think that’s the only way we are going to be able to proceed. Make plans, and keep in mind that we can be flexible. Enjoy your walk tomorrow. It should be nice to get caught up with someone you haven’t seen in such a long time! Even with too much talking. 🙂

    • My emails show up on the camera with a very loud beep. I have to figure out how to turn that off. I’ll try to work with the safety beeps for a while. Today I did a terrible job of parking. Despite the fact that it is the same but newer model as my old one, I have to relearn judging for parking. I’m starting to look like an old granny parking willy nilly!

  10. I love your new car. My daughter’s newish car beeps, and she complains, but she keeps it on. What are “stickers”?

    Have a nice walk with your old pal. I enjoy my alone-walks either for the solitude or to listen to a podcast. Walking with a friend is also good. Yesterday my sister and I found a beautiful new path through the forest. I probably wouldn’t have felt comfortable doing it by myself.

    • Stickers are momentary sharp pains that defy reason. I had my walk this morning and she needed it more than I did. Her husband is in the late stages of his illness and he’s overall cantankerous. She has her hands full. They are so used to doing everything themselves that he won’t allow her to get help. In the heat she painted their deck. There are people who do that and they can afford that.

      • I feel so sorry for her. Nurses and doctors aren’t our only healthcare heroes. There are lots of caretakers out there taking care of their own family members, work that’s made even harder when the person is cantankerous. Eventually she may have to ask for help.

  11. Beautiful car and same color as my Regal was. I always felt like a princess in it with its trim, pin-striping and Landau roof. It’s probably hard to tune the beeping out, but increased safety features is always good at any rate.

  13. “tell the weather by your ribs” – that’s great way to look at it.
    Many have evacuated from. NOLA to here. A goo d many have family here, but there are also shelters. Like someone said “It’s just what living along the Gulf Coast is like” We all know it might be us headed their away next time, so the welcome mat is out.
    I love that red! New cars are always an adventure – especially after being in a crash. Glad this one makes you happy – it’ll catch on to you shortly and be purring like a kitten just for your touch.
    (Concert – go for it – and stay flexible. It sounds like a lovely idea!)

    • Hope you are safe from Ida. Sounds pretty nasty. New cars are an adventure. Fortunately some of the basic features are similar to my old car so I know where they are. I’ve already had to “find” the turn signals on a rental!

      • We are a state away….and on the dry “good side”. Whew. Terrible storms last night and lost power – but that was totally unrelated to the hurricane.
        HaHA – rental cars! I had trouble finding out ow to turn off the overhead cabin light once…felt like driving around in a lighted fish tank until I finally found it!

        • Went with my girlfriend to a weekend painting seminar once. She never drove at night, her husband did all the driving. It started to get dark and she didn’t know how to turn the lights on. I almost split a gut laughing.

  16. I’m glad you got the car you wanted! Hopefully you’ll get used to the beeps but I know what you mean about them going off for no apparent reason. I have some friends who were taking their daughter to college during Katrina. Their story of their escape during the hurricane was pretty scary. I hope the city and its inhabitants fare much better this time.

  17. I am happy to hear that your pain from the accident is gone so that you can enjoy driving that awesome shade of RED vehicle! So concerned about anyone in the path of Ida. Hope all that needed to evacuate did so and others are hunkered down. Enjoy your walk tomorrow with your walking buddy!

  19. You are braver than I am getting tickets for a concert in September!! Still hoping we get to go on vacation at the end of October, but I’m not putting any money down on anything yet.

  21. Nice how you opted for the car you really want, Kate. It is a purchase you will have for a long time and worth the extras. I was wondering what happened to the woman who talked you to death. Glad you will catch up. Stay safe with Ida!

  22. I visited New Orleans 5 years after Katrina, and was able to see some after-effects still there 5 years later. Forecasters there are saying Ida will make Katrina look like ‘child’s play’. I’m praying that most evacuated rather than choose to ‘shelter in place’. Buildings can be replaced; lives cannot. And congrats on the red car! My friend has a car with the internal beeping – after two months, she went to the dealership and they told her how to turn it off. I’ll be interesting in seeing if you can tolerate it for the long haul!

    • My husband has it and I jump out of my skin when it goes off. Sometimes it’s just the garbage can 2 ft. away. Scary. Praying for the folks down there. It takes a long time to rebuild. “They say” that the levees are in better shape than they were back then but I guess we’ll see.

    Glad you are finally feeling healed from your injuries. 7 weeks definitely is long when you are in pain.
    Glad your friend’s daughter got to come home! What a way to start college! Praying it won’t be as bad as what it is sounding like.
    My son can’t wait to go to a concert again! He is supposed to go in September too. Hopefully all will be OK!

  26. Nice wheels! The beeping would irritate me for sure, though. In my car, the radio turns on automatically with the car, which I hate. There appears to be no way to turn it off automatically, either. Loathsome feature! I want my quiet!

  27. The new wheels are quite pretty! Here’s hoping you become less sensitive to the safety beeps. May you have a long and uneventful life together. Enjoy your walk with your old walking buddy. You’re right about one thing, planning anything in the future is challenging. I committed to an artisan holiday festival around Thanksgiving but have no idea is it’ll actually happen or not. Given that too many people aren’t taken the Delta variant seriously enough, I’m less than confident. “We’ll see” is the constant daily mantra for these times.
