Random 5 for July 25, 2021 – Falls, projects, fear, therapy, pond

This should not be removed!

A goose and gander thing? – About two months ago the beloved husband fell over with the kitchen chair. One minute he was sitting at the table and the next he was on the ground sideways still sitting on the chair. After suppressing my intense urge to giggle, I asked him what happened and he didn’t know. I assumed he was being a klutz. Our chairs have wheels and it’s on a different carpet than it used to be so the feel when you roll it is different. Yesterday I fell over. In the same chair! Now I know it has nothing to do with being a klutz. Probably. I was trying to roll in closer to the table and flup I was on the floor. Sideways. Still sitting in the chair. It’s funny how something is so much more real when it happens to you.

So what’s the date? – We are getting kitchen work done in October. It will be a messy six week job. All appliances will be taken out. I’m both looking forward to it and dreading it. I want to be as prepared as possible with take-out menus and slow cooker ready. Somehow we will need to set up a temporary kitchen. But wait, will they be here on October 1st or the 31st. Contractors rarely are on target with their start dates. Stay tuned for this saga. I can guarantee you there will be posts generated from this experience. Any food suggestions welcome!

The fear – I started driving yesterday. After my accident I have a healthy dose of fear running through me. I am driving the beloved husband’s minivan with seems huge compared to my smaller SUV. So far so good and I am grateful that every time I hit the brakes they work.

People therapy – I had dinner with some friends this week and it was good therapy. We caught up with what’s going on in our lives and there were plenty of giggles (which still hurt!). Sometimes just a spot of human therapy does the trick especially when you can’t get pond therapy.

I miss these guys!

Speaking of pond therapy – I’ve missed the pond this week. My “creek” walk is a bit too far at this point so I miss the water therapy. I hope the new owners did not take it out and are enjoying the flowers and critters.

So how was your week?

  1. Maybe after the kitchen build you can put in a small pond? Cheaper than therapy! 🙂 I’m glad you’re getting out and doing some driving despite the fear, but I sure do understand how it will take time to feel comfortable. One small appliance suggestion for you, if you don’t already have one, would be an Instant Pot. I use mine several times a week and think it could really be helpful while your kitchen is under construction. Just a thought! 🙂

  2. Trying not to laugh, but definitely understand those weird crevasses that spontaneously appear and disappear. That’s how husband broke his arm on perfectly normal, flat, clean surface during a walk – and he wasn’t even walking the dog.
Seated ghost in chair? Or maybe guck on wheel causing a stall and rock ‘n roll over?
Minivans drive so much different than SUVs. But you’ll manage..that…the remodeling is another thing. Cats will complain and be so unhappy. You’ll all need a soothing water feature.
Hope the contractors get in an out on time and under budget!

    • I giggled at your comment. I fractured my kneecap by falling on flat dry macadam on a perfectly wonderfully sunny day. I was in a garden center which is my favorite place for therapy. It was a boring and embarrassing story.

  3. Glad to see you took the first step to get back to driving again – good for you Kate. I once fell out of a desk chair. I was a teenager and my desk was in the den in a tight corner and I’d gather everything I needed for studying before I went into the corner, except that time I forgot something and the chair had no wheels and I tried to exit in a hurry, fell sideways out of the chair with a big kerplunk. Don’t schedule an elaborate Thanksgiving Dinner just in case something goes awry – yes, I am never the optimist when it comes to contractors!

  4. The gardener makes me watch People’s Court. Be sure to have your kitchen contract include TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE. LOL I hope you’re planning to get rid of that dangerous chair!!!!

    • Yes, I had one bad episode with a contractor. We added 5 foot to our screened porch. There was concrete work and roof work. It took 6 months. They were into it a few weeks and got a more lucrative, critical job and just left ours sit. Never will use them again and won’t recommend them. The finished product was good but they weren’t creative and they also didn’t communicate what was going on.

    • I know. We have a contractor starting next week (fingers crossed) and the kitchen in October (hopefully). Our dining room table has already been pushed out from June to September. I feel like most of this year will be camping here. Nothing quite where it belongs.

  5. Nothing more healing than giggles, even if they hurt a bit. Friends/giggles = feeling SO much better. Although, I hope your man didn’t giggle when you feel down with the chair. Those chairs – a little scary. Good luck with the kitchen redo. We have good friends going through that. They put their toaster oven and microwave in the garage to cook. Not fun, but worth it for the end result.

  6. We probably should have had some reno work done here since we’ve lived in this house for 25 years but we haven’t….other than new overhead lighting in kitchen and hardwood flooring in there as well. Whole kitchen reno sounds exciting – the basement “alternative” kitchen idea sounds great for you. I do hope your old pond is still there – such a peaceful spot – if the new owners “talked” about taking it out they very well may have especially if their two girls are little ones. I foresee a pond in your future THERE….some little mini-oasis where all the bad things melt away into the peaceful shade. Really.

    Hugs, Pam

  7. That chair is pretty clearly defective – out it goes! Not surprise you miss your pond – it was really beautiful, though I’m sure it was a lot of work. Hope the new owners appreciate it! Good for you getting back out driving again. Are you looking for a smaller car for your replacement?

  8. Those chairs are weird!!! I can’t imagine a chair falling sideways like that. Maybe I’m not very imaginative, but it seems strange.

I’m not surprised that you miss your pond. It’s gorgeous. Thank you for sharing it with us, your blogging friends.

  9. Sounds like the chair needs to go. Different carpets shouldn’t cause a problem. People therapy is good when it’s the right people. Love the pictures of the pond. The frogs look like they are having frog therapy.

  10. Renovations are always a pain, but a new kitchen is worth the inconvenience. I would love one, our cabinets are original from when the house was built in 1947. 🙂

  11. I know that driving again after a car accident is a challenge, but it’s something you gotta do. Kudos for getting back behind the wheel again. Also, sending good vibes your way for the kitchen renovation. Can’t start too early with that positive energy.

    • We have a spare in the basement and may keep the big one in the garage. I may set up a quasi-kitchen in the basement there is a nice area in front of french doors to put the dining table. Just no range and the sink is a utility sink.

  12. Italian dishes usually work quite well in a slow cooker – with microwave rice or pasta. We just found one of our cats sat in the garden with the local fox. They seem to be friends.

    • The only thing I worry about is boiling pasta noodles. I can eat Italian every day but I have to figure a way to boil the noodles. We had foxes at our last house. One of them was stalking my old cat Jake and I made him come in the house. No one wanted to be friends. They must have enough other food that cat doesn’t sound tasty.

  13. Sorry, but I am laughing out loud all by myself at the chair just getting all misbehaving and taking you and the beloved husband, at different times, on the way down with you still in it! I can truly see it in in my head. I am glad neither of you were hurt.
I understand your fear about driving and I haven’t had an accident that was as serious. Florida traffic is nuts with all the oldsters driving and I have lost some of my faith in my own driving ability. I don’t like driving here… spatial issues everywhere.
What you say about people therapy… #truth.
You will work out the kitchen thing. Slow cookers are a lifesaver. We also picked up take out from junk food to regular nice meals.

    • We have an extra refrigerator in the basement and I’m thinking maybe we could set up a kitchen there. There is a sink in the boiler room that can be cleaned up to use and we have an area to put our round table there to eat in front of french doors. Since we’ll only have temporary equipment, I’m thinking I’ll freeze some meals to microwave and use take-out. We’ll see how it works and how easy or hard it is. This was my first accident but it was a brake failure. I’m having trouble trusting cars. Other drivers don’t help.

  14. Sounds like one of the wheels on that chair might be a bit wonky . . . making the sitter in the seat a bit wobbly?

Glad you were able to get behind the wheel again. Fear, in moderation, is a good thing. Full blown fear, unbridled with common sense, is a monster.

Sorry you can’t get to your creek walk yet. Soon.

Do you have some place to plug in the fridge during the reno?
Will you have a microwave? Or a camp stove you can use on the deck?

If you’ll have a fridge available, that will simplify things. If not, buy a big cooler with ice?

    • We do have an extra fridge in the basement and I’ll try to set up an auxiliary (rustic) kitchen there. I know from traveling that 6 weeks is a long to to rely on take-out. After a while you long for a simple home cooked meal. We have a microwave, slow cooker and I’m thinking of buying a portable hot plate. We’ll see how it goes.

  15. Jacket potatoes and microwave meals. I remember when my kitchen was the washing machine (not plumbed in yet) with the microwave on top of it and the kettle on top of that. Serving the food involved Hubby holding the two plates. Hope your work is Oct 1st and finished ahead of schedule. 6 weeks is a long time.
