Address changes – For the most part, making address changes these days is easier than it used to be. Many can be done on-line. The magazine subscriptions are a motley crew for sure. Birds and Blooms was easy peasy. As was Better Homes and Gardens which triggered other magazines for the same publisher. There were a few tricky ones. Address changes should be a standard thing in our transient world but a few want you to call (on the phone!) or send them a notice (snail mail!). In principle I should eliminate these just for lack of progress.

On the same note – Our phone number (landline) will change. The area that we are moving to (four miles away) requires specific standards on the numbers. What? Makes no sense to me especially as we are dinosaurs with a landline. Before you think we are too dotty and are calling the white coats, it comes gratis with an internet-cable package. Since my phone isn’t always with me, it’s a better bet to leave us a message on the landline than on a cell.

The occasional find – I’m cleaning out. In disposing my old work files, I found a couple of photographs. The one shown is me in the late 1980s. I remember the time. I loved my job (this is a lunchtime shot) and my life. I remember that outfit lividly. I loved it and was sad to donate it many years ago. The jacket had shoulder pads a linebacker would use so yes it had to be let go. I’m not a fan of most pictures of me but there is something here that I love. Maybe the innocence and hope of life that was still there. It’s been squashed down several times since then but I hope that I can still light up when I’m happy.

  1. these are the things none of us think about BEFORE MOVING! so many details to manage. BTW I love that photo, you look so comfortable & at peace with yourself. Yes we still have a landline. Free calls to the Canadians and the voice quality is better than on a cell 🙂 Happy Moving ……… it will be over soon !

  2. That’s a great picture of you Kate. I remember the shoulder pads in jackets and also in blouses as well – double padding! If I remember correctly, the show “Dynasty” was always joked about for their shoulder pads. I never watched it – it was enough keeping up with “Knots Landing”, “Dallas” and “Falcon Crest”. I still have a landline too and just a flip phone which I never use unless I make a long-distance or out-of-zone call as I took those features off my landline.

  4. Great photo of you! I throw up my hands when it comes to any consistency about magazine address changes. Some make it so hard to even locate that information in the magazine or their website, while others seem to do it automatically somehow before I even get around to contacting them. – Marty

  5. That really is a wonderful photo, Kate. Your contentedness shows through that sweet smile and you just look adorable. I love it. I do so much through on-line information exchanges, bill pay, insurance monitoring, and subscriptions, and it’s at once convenient and yet still time consuming. I think some websites are just designed to keep you on them longer than necessary! I’m sure it’s going to be such a huge relief when you get moved and can put these chores behind you!

    • There are two websites that are catch 22 situations. I go in circles but part of my problem is that I need the specific number which I don’t have. Many magazines now come in plastic bags and they got thrown out by mistake. I will have to wait for the next cycle and hope for the best. That picture is one of my favorites. I’m not all that young. I had to be in my mid to late 30s (which sounds very young to me now!).

  6. It’s a lovely photo of you Kate. You look pleased/contented/happy. I remember the 80’s and yea the shouderpads were too outrageous, but otherwise the clothes had style. I still have a landline too, (bundle package) as I the cell phone is in my purse and I don’t check it regularly.

    • One big difference in looks between then and now is that my eyes and brows were much darker. My face is also thinner. I lost some of the nice fat in my cheeks! 🙂 Move is coming along. Every day more gets done.

  17. Your picture is very pretty. You look innocent and sweet. Perhaps naïve? LOL We have started to house hunt too. NOT a fun thing. Frustrating at best. Did I read this correctly, you have to use the existing cable company…and use the cable company for a phone? Does that mean your email address is also changing?

    • We can use our same cable company but the phone number has to be changed to align with some regs for the new area (which is only 4 miles from where I live now). No email changes. That would be a nightmare.

  18. As others have said, you look happy and content. I think you hit something with the “innocence and hope of life that was still there.” I remember when there was so much in front of me to do. As Pam said, I feel like I am looking back on memories now and not looking so much forward. But I am living in the minute now which is something I never did before. I am trying to take it all in. You look fresh and sweet and I bet you smelled wonderful too… some great scent?! You have made me reflective today, Kate.

    • I think I wore Estee Lauder’s Beautiful or one or her scents at that time. I have always been fussy with scents. Not too strong or cloying. Maybe it was the “so much ahead of me” phase. I was doing well professionally and enjoying every minute of it. Life was good. I can say the same about now but there are more bumps in the road now.

  19. Wonderful picture! When I look at pictures of me when I was young I wonder why I thought I was plain and unattractive. People said I was beautiful but I never believed them. I haven’t had a landline in years and haven’t missed it except one time when most of the city was without electricity for 4 days. That was a pain trying to conserve the battery when everyone was calling to see how I was and if I needed anything.

        • Yes it is. Several years ago, I caught The Talk, a daytime talk show on TV. On that program the 5 people who are featured appeared without makeup. I was stunned at how different and ordinary they looked. They still were pretty but not stunningly so. That show really had an effect on me. Any one of us could look like a million bucks if we had a “crew” to make us up. At this point in my life, I rarely use makeup and during the pandemic definitely not.

  24. Lovely image…you look pretty much the same (with the addition of glasses). How in the world did you manage that? #lookinggood

    I suspect the specificity of the landline is connected to 911 location issues but could be wrong. At one time I eliminated my LAN line and left my cell phone at a scrapbook shop located about 25 miles away in the southern suburbs (yikes) on a weekend. The cell had my contact info (office number) in case it was found pasted to the back side and they were kind enough to leave a message there but I was panic stricken until I found out. I re-upped my LAN line right away. If I’d have had a medical emergency, I’d have had no way of contacting help and decided a basic home line was far more important than being without.

  25. Until I read to the end I thought that was a current photo of you maybe at the new house. Shows how much changing styles mean since I have reached the elderly status. Shoulder pads? Why not? Truth is you were beautiful then and you are beautiful now.

  26. That photo of you is a real keeper and I can see why…….I had a blouse like that – nice and “drapey” and soft – I LOVED it and have never found one similar in all these years. You look happy/content……and I think we all have had that look at some point but it does seem to fade or change through the years. Maybe at the point we start looking BACK instead of forward as much….not sure but I have kept a few of those photos of myself as reminders of a GOOD time in my life. Just so you don’t feel alone in the world – – – we have a landline too! LOL

  27. I LOVE that picture, Kate. You do look happy, and content! I get it about the shoulder pads. I tried removing them from some of my outfits when the style changed, but then the (over-extended) shoulders sagged, of course! It was beyond my patience (and let’s face it: skills) at that time to haul out the sewing machine and rejig the shoulder seams so off to Value Village they went.

  29. I can see why you saved that picture. It’s perfect. I remember the wide collar spread and pleats, too. Those were great shirts.
    That picture is and always will be you – it is your essence- timeless and ageless. (Scan it Mohave a BW copy if the colors fade. Tuck that in somewhere safe but where it can be found…a favorite book perhaps?)
    Changing phone numbers? AAArrrrgghh. Hadn’t thought that. We have one for the “bundles” and for the office…along with people we do’t want to give out cell # to. Another thing to deal with.
    Hpe all are healing and doing well (hope to catchup this week, but treatments have been hitting a bit harder, so I’m mostly MIA) Hangin in there- it will be worth it
    (Hmmmm “small” containter-size fountain with plants? Once you’ve had your own private pond, it may be hard to be without?)

    • Subsequent rounds of treatments can be harder and my best wishes go out to you and your family. I don’t give out my cell number and if I do it’s always with the text me, don’t call. I will pursue some sort of water feature for the deck. Must be something easy.

    • Sunglasses were big and tortoise shell. It was very nostalgic to find it. I also found one with one of my old supervisors. He and I were about the same age and it was a great shot except it’s a little dark. I should photoshop it to see if I can improve it.

    • They are. I’ve never felt that I was a great beauty but in this picture I see a happiness which shines through. I can’t remember who I was with when the pictures was taken but I know the park (near my workplace at the time) and I remember the outfit. I only wish I could see what shoes I had on. I always was a fashion person with fun shoes and clothes. Now I’m in jeans and sweats every day but I have some fun sneakers.

  34. That’s a really lovely photo! And we still have a landline as well. I use that number for companies that others that I don’t want coming on my cell, and the landline is the one that gets most of the spam phone calls too, where I can simply ignore them!

    • I am not good enough about having my cell phone close by and accessing messages (except for texts) is time consuming on my cell. The voice mail light flashes so we remember to check it regularly. I’ve been getting spam on my cell too. Fortunately my cell company ID’s it as spam.
