This bothers me a lot more than her and it bothers her a lot. She woke me up this morning by banging her cone on the door. It was 6 a.m.

It’s been one helluva week here!

First the good news! – We sold our house. Contracts were signed so it’s all done except for the inspections, appraisals and moving. It can still go south but we are hopeful. It was only on the market for four days. We had seven showings and two offers. All good!

Now for the bad – Within hours of finalizing the agreement, our cat Morgan broke her leg. We have no idea how she did it. My best guess is that she attempted a jump, misjudged and landed wrong. It happened Thursday night. She limped Friday but I thought it was a soft tissue injury. Saturday she wouldn’t walk on it. I was lucky to get her in to see the vet early. She has a splint on it and must wear a cone. My cats don’t wear collars so she is very unhappy. I was hoping she would nap and take it easy but that’s not happening. She is such a good cat. She didn’t deserve this!

About that collar – The one the vet put on is hard plastic with three loops (also of hard plastic) that extend down. They seem to be bothering her. It’s not clear so it blocks her vision. I reached out and was able to get a recommendation for an easier to wear collar. Jeff Bezos has promised I’ll have it by Monday. He has always come through for my cats so fingers crossed he will again.

Notice anything? – If you are a regular reader you should have picked up that again my cats always have a crisis on weekends, holidays and now we can add pandemics. Maybe I should add “when in the middle of a house sale.”

Some thoughts on the week – Whenever I think we have passed some milestones and life will be easier, something else happens. We keep pushing through. There is no other choice but I am an emotional basket case! There are silver linings. I was grateful Morgan broke her leg after we had a sale. She is isolated in a room and anxious to get out. It would have been hard to show the home while she was like this. We would have had to take her with us. Also not ideal to keep jostling her around.

  3. The one thing about beginning to read the most recent post, I can hear about the happy endings. And, yes, crises weekends and holidays. Great about your house selling, Kate. Lots happening around here, such as two months later we still have strange, masked men in our house almost every day, dealing with results from our flood. Happy we were not away for a few days when it happened.

  4. Great news – you’ll wrap up this whole (or)deal much quicker than anticipated. Poor Morgan though. I hope its a quick recovery and did the vet do the pink cast because Morgan is a girl to make her pretty in pink? For goodness sake – 2021 is not much better than 2020 was. I’m glad you found a better solution for Morgan. When the move is all over, I hope you can sit and just relax and take in what you got accomplished in a pandemic.

  5. Elizabethan collars may frame the face elegantly, but not very practical…like eating and seeing. Glad you’ve located another option – a big soft “sombrero” style might be more modern celebrity style. That picture is something – the expression…sardines, please, hand fed….at 6 am if requested…(Who could not want to soothe that little cat with that expression)
    So thrilled about the home sale.

    • Today is day 5 of the broken leg chronicles. She has been good. I’ve taken the collar off for hours when I’m with her. She does not try to chew it or lick it so I had it off most of yesterday but put it back on for overnight. They gave me gabapentin to give her. It’s supposed to calm her and help with pain so maybe that’s why she’s so calm. I’ll see how this goes. If she doesn’t need it, I won’t use it. I’ve never used one before for any surgery. I probably hurts me more than it bothers her. We were thrilled too. Cloroxing (new word?) the whole house after each showing was getting old.

      • House selling is like living in an alternate universe.
        Cats heal quickly…so she’d better make use of all the sympathy time available…..wonder if in the future when she wants something she will fake limp in and hold that paw up in your face with a sad “You owe me look”? HAHA

        • I hope she heals quickly. She’s isolated in a room by herself. I go in frequently to spend time with her and we have not put the collar on her today at all. Last night all of us including the 3 other cats who have a vigil outside her room almost at all times (dinnertime not counted) went in and spent an hour with her. By the end she was exhausted and asked us to leave so she could sleep. She is a very good cat but it’s painful for me to see her like this. She limps on 3 legs and will not put weight on the fourth. Could be the splint bothering her too. Poor baby.

  7. So sorry about dear Morgan’s broken leg. Poor thing. And yes, the first thing I thought was “uh-oh…another weekend vet cat-catastrophe. Pets always manage to pick the most inconvenient time to get sick or injured, don’t they? Sending loads of healing thoughts for a quick recovery.

    But big-time congrats on selling the house (which I knew you would, heck, if I lived in your ‘hood, I’d have wanted to buy it so I figured it’d go quickly).

  10. Morgan’s expression is priceless. She is NOT a happy cat, but she is obviously strong and will heal quickly. That is my prognosis. But so many congrats on selling your home so quickly – that is fabulous. I’ve realized that the better the news, the more likely we are to have something not-so-good to balance off the good with the bad. Life is a “balancing act,” for sure. ❤

  11. Woo Hoo to the house sale! Your home is beautiful, and I never doubted a quick sale. The sunroom alone is enough for me to sign the dotted line.
    My heart goes out to Morgan 😦 Although, I’m loving that hot pink wrap, she’s quite the fashionista! No doubt she’ll love her new collar, anything is better than what they give out.

    • What is it with vets? I paid $16 for a stiff, uncomfortable DOG collar that isn’t clear so she has no peripheral vision. Why don’t they stock some comfortable ones for cats? BTW the new collar is $10 so why do they jack up prices? (All rhetorical questions because we know the answers!) After a crazy 24 hours, Morgan is doing better. At first the cone and the split made her crazy. Now with some nice meds, she’s happy or as happy as she can be with all that’s going on with her.

  12. Wow, well, congratulations on selling! So sorry about Morgan. I would sign her cast if I could, she does look cute, even with that horrible cone humans keep putting on us!! I would send her catnip and treats to get her through if I could. Take good care of her!

  15. That sure was a good news/bad news post! Congrats on your house (not that I am surprised at all) and sympathy hugs to Morgan. I’ve seen pictures of more comfortable collars for dogs (why did it take so long to develop something like that?) so I imagine they have them for cats too. Here’s hoping for a smoother ride for you and your kitties until you get into your new home.

  17. Dang, it bothers me too, Kate, when animals are injured.Vets don’t seem to carry a soft pliable cones. I bought one that is soft made of cloth. My heart goes to Morgan.

  20. We have had a lot of non-routine pandemic veterinary appointments, too. I’m glad that Morgan got what she needs. Good luck with the cone. We had a cat with a broken bone in his paw once. He removed every splint and cast applied. We finally had to confine him to a crate so that he didn’t walk on it until it was all healed. Good luck to you both!

    • So far (24 hours) Morgan hasn’t tried to remove the splint but she occasionally thumps it on the floor as if that would get it off. I worry about that. We don’t have a large crate and I’m hoping I won’t need one. She is better today than yesterday. I take the cone off for an hour or so several times a day when I go in. She has trouble eating with it. We just didn’t need this extra stressor now.

  22. Congratulations on the quick sale of the house. In a different market the sale could have taken months. Ugh! I’m sure you don’t even want to imagine that.

    I’m so sorry about Morgan! We don’t expect a cat to break a leg. Maybe their grace and agility make us think they’re indestructible. These seem to be the years for reaching one milestone and almost immediately being presented with another challenge.

  27. I am sorry to see the photo of poor sweet clumsy Morgan. On the other hand *yay* about the house sale. As for the backdrop to the week that was, it’s going to take me a long time to process what happened and how it’ll change our country going forward. Forward being the word I’m focused on.

  31. I have one of the life-preserver type cones for my dog. So much better than the cone (which Woofie used to menace our more sensitive dog, Fey, and steal the bed)! It’s more comfy for the dog and also doesn’t hit doorways, furniture, and my legs.

    Broken bones in cats are unusual. They’re usually good at sticking the landings! So sorry, Morgan.

    • The vet did not recommend a soft cone at all. She said they don’t work. Maybe it’s tougher for cats? Anyhow the one I am getting is supposedly less rigid than the one from the vet. I couldn’t believe that the vet one is like frosted. It restricts her vision which already is less. The new one is clear. If it doesn’t work, I’ll continue on my search for a better one. I don’t know why they can’t put a material on the split so she doesn’t lick it or make it waterproof as that seems to be the issue.

  34. Poor little pumpkin. That detracts somewhat from your celebration of “We Sold It!”

    Tigger did something similar as a young cat. I was on the phone and heard a bang and a YEOWL. Never figured out exactly what happened, but Tigger was in obvious pain and couldn’t walk. He had broken the head off the top of his femur and had to have surgery . . . but no splint. And no cone. And the bone formed a new head so he didn’t even limp once healed.

    Swift healing to Morgan. Hope the new cone is a good fit. And congrats on the sale!!!

    • Wow! Yay for Tigger! No surgery as the bones are so small in diameter there isn’t much they can do. It has to heal naturally. She doesn’t like being cooped up in the cat room even though it’s a very sunny room with great windows and she doesn’t like the cone. I don’t like the cone but they don’t want her licking or chewing on the splint fabric. It took the stuffings out of any joy we had.

  35. Congratulations on the house sale Kate! Heal well Morgan. When my friends cat was hit by a car and had multiple breaks … the vet said don’t worry – with cats you can have different bones scattered around a room and they we find each other and knit together. They did! May ‘organ knit together quickly!

    • We could have done without more cat drama. Gracie had the tooth problem when we closed on the new home and now this. I took the cone off of her this morning for an hour so she could eat and bath herself. She didn’t fight when I put it back on. It’s there to keep her from chewing off the bandage. I wish there was a different deterrent like a bad taste or something.

    • I hope so. Maybe in a few days Morgan will settle down more and an adjusted normalcy can return to the house. Right now she is sequestered in the cat room. On the other side of the door are three cats wondering if the grass is greener (and by that I mean treats) on the other side.

  41. Goodness…..I suppose whoever said life was all about balancing was right! FABULOUS that the house sold but OHMYGOODNESS on poor Morgan. Well she does not look happy but who would under her circumstances?! I just had a feeling your house would sell quickly – you had a lot of interest and I just know people “saw” the yard for what it is in Spring and Summer…..hard to resist that! I know it’s not a done deal but I really think it IS. I also think Morgan will be one happy girl when the leg heals and the cone is “history” ! CONGRATULATIONS……really.

  43. I hope the new collar comes Monday as scheduled and that it is more comfortable for Morgan. I love those collars for my foster kittens when spayed. They tolerate it soooo much better. Won’t use anything else in the future.

    • I’ve never used a collar even after a spay. I had one cat take out her own stitches. The vet wasn’t concerned. In this case, she would lick her splint making it wet. I’m giving her coneless time when I stay with her until the new collar arrives. She has trouble eating and cleaning herself with it. The first thing she did when I took it off this morning was wash her face and rub her cheek glands. She didn’t even go for the bandage. We are blocking off the stairs and I’ll let her roam the upstairs. She has gabapentin so I’m hopeful it will slow her down.

  44. I hope you found her a soft cone flower collar. She would make a sweet flower. Whatever you chose I know she will be happier with it than the hard plastic one. Poor Morgan, poor you. You know how happy I am about the sale of your home. True about it being great timing so there are no showings to disturb Morgan’s recovery. Congratulations and fingers crossed for a smooth sail to closing!

    • Thanks. Morgan’s injury is still all new. She “donkey kicks” her back leg to get it off. The vet she will get used to it. I sure hope so because I worry she will injure it although it’s very well wrapped.
