Bonk! – I almost ran into a tree. My car radio was on and the local nudist camp was advertising “Hippyfest.” They’ve never advertised there. Hippyfest is running this weekend with drum circles, yoga and a host of other activities. All done by naked people. I doubt that it will be a pretty sight. The visions in my head are what almost caused the accident. By the way, music will be by Two Nuts. That just about took me off the road and into a ditch. Honest, I can’t make this stuff up!
Just one more thing – The place is called Shady Rest. Doesn’t that sound more like a cemetery or an old folk’s home? Certainly not a place for swingers. Maybe they don’t swing. They just display the goods. Hope they don’t get sunburn.
Some sad news – Another casualty of covid-19 is my gym. It closed permanently because they couldn’t come to terms with the landlord. It was in a large building that they originally shared with a grocery store. The grocery closed about five years ago. Because of inflexibility, the landlord now has a huge empty building. Maybe you get tax credits from that because it didn’t make sense to me.
Some good news – On the other hand, our local mall opened to walkers in the early morning. It will be a good alternative to neighborhood walking in bad weather. I went on Friday and there were about ten of us. Walking with a mask is annoying. By the time I was done, I just wanted to get to my car for to breathe.
So what’s going on? – As I’ve bumped (not literally) into a few people everyone asks the same questions. Are you affected by the virus and what are you up to? I know some people who were affected but it didn’t touch my family. As for what am I doing, dang it’s garden time, pond maintenance, other outside work and new cat. I fall into bed every night exhausted!
So how was your week?
Thank goodness the nude beach allows flip-flops! Somehow, I wonder if that’s a double entendre.

I wonder if our mall is open to walkers? I hadn’t thought of that as a way to get a walk in on these humid, humid, hazy days. Thanks for the idea.

Worth a try. Ours opens at 8 a.m. so I can get it in early.

A hippyfest with drum circles at a nudist camp is strange enough, but it’s the name of the place that really made me scratch my head. Shady Rest? OMG!
Sorry about your gym. I’ve been exercising at home and mostly taking neighborhood walks. Sometimes I branch out and find other not-too-busy places around town for my walks. I’m enjoying the summer weather while it lasts.

We are in a high temperature-high humidity weather pattern right now. I was grateful to be walking inside the mall. Even at 8 a.m. it’s too hot and humid outside. When it breaks, I’ll be back to walking in the hood at least until bad weather sets in again.

Well. I’m self isolating today because I woke up with a sore throat. Feel fine except for that. But I can’t go back to work until I test negative. WELL, I have to work from home. I just can’t physically go to work. It feels like I’m a slacker but its also the safest way.

Oh no! I’m so sorry. Hope your test is negative and it’s a run of the mill sore throat.

An old friend of mine used to visit a nudist place (I’m not sure “colony” is the right word, but then I’m pretty ignorant on the subject). We were all in our thirties at the time, and he talked about how there were old and young there. I haven’t asked him in years about this, but I suspect he’s no longer going to it. I can’t imagine wanting to be nude around strangers, especially as I’ve gotten older. Yech. Love the name of the band, though. 🙂
Sorry about your gym. I haven’t been to ours since the pandemic, though my wife has gone a few times in the middle of the day when, she claims, it’s nearly empty. They’re ostensibly building a new one across town, but I have to wonder if that project might now be on hold. – Marty

The gym business must be tough now. Between conflicting rules and regs and fearful people, it must be a challenge. I’ve never been a “nude comfortable” person, even when I was young.

Shady Rest? Wasn’t that the name of the hotel in Petticoat Junction?
Will the nudists be wearing masks, I wonder?
Sorry to hear about your gym closing, Kate.

Not sure about the masks but it’s required in enclosed spaces in this state. Shady Rest was the name of the nursing home that Dorothy would threaten Sophia in Golden Girls.

Sad about your gym. Two of our favorite restaurants have not been able to hang on. Red tide for almost two seasons and now Covid has been hard on a lot of businesses. I would love to have a mall, a cool place close to walk. The Hippyfest, no, just no. Two Nuts… LOL!

So many changes so fast. I will miss my gym and there isn’t another one as convenient. I’m not much of a gym person. If I have to drive even 20 minutes, I won’t go. I didn’t realize that you had red tide again. I’m surprises there isn’t a solution to that.

No red tide now but it started up off and on after we moved here and cleared out last year. I think, time frame is fuzzy.

So sorry to hear about your gym! Are you going to look for a new one, or just do more walking? The Shady Rest event is pretty hilarious – I would have lost it too 🙂

I didn’t remember half of what they said but it was hysterical. Sure got my attention. More walking. I’m not a big gym person to start with and if it’s not conveniently located very close to a Starbucks, there’s no hope of my attendance.

🙂 We tried going to a gym – we almost never went, as it was tough for us to work it into our routine. It doesn’t help that we aren’t gym people really. Walking is so much easier to fit into a routine!

I’m not a gym person either so if it’s not close and near a Starbucks, I won’t go. It was good for my upper body exercise. I like walking though. I should use weights on my arms when I walk.

That would do it! Do you have a Starbucks you can walk to?

I think more and more gyms are going to fold here too. Here in my city, one gym owner was defiant and opened despite the Governor’s order and a group of “regulars” went there and everyone was arrested for disobeying the order. The nudist beach story is cute. The mask is a pain in the heat – even the paper ones.

I don’t walk outside with a mask so when I walked inside I was surprised at how annoying it was. Part is because I’m exercising so I’m breathing harder. I’ll get used to it because it will be around for a while but I have a sympathy for docs who have to wear heavier ones all day for surgeries.

I got the bandanas to fold for masks and bought coffee filters to slip in between the layers, then we got to the streak of 90+ degree days so I have been using paper masks instead ever since.

Paper masks are better for me than the cloth ones. It’s a personal choice.

Well I’m hearing they are now considered better than cloth masks so I only wear the bandanas to the Park now.

I had a friend way back who was a nudist and he used to tell stories. He said many of the people who go to nude beaches are not beautiful people and that’s why they go where they are accepted. I don’t know if that’s true but it’s what he told me.

OH my gosh about the nudist beach and 2 Nuts! Your posts always bring laughter!
Sorry about your gym closing, glad you can walk at the mall, but yes I don’t know how long I would be able to do that with a mask on! Glad you and your family have been well, keep it that way! 🙂

Thanks. One door opens, one door closes. They should ban nudist commercials on the radio. They are very dangerous! 🙂

So, to sum up, your week was a little annoying, but ok. Right? Yeah, me too. RIP your gym. But I think a lot of people aren’t going to want to go back to gyms. That is going to be a very hurt business.

I hadn’t gone back myself yet. I thought maybe in the fall depending on how things were. I drove by it a few times and there were people there but I’m sure the older people who went in the morning when I went were more reluctant. I cannot complain. We have been lucky in many ways — good health and no effect on our income. Everyone should be so lucky.

I didn’t even need poetic license for that one. I couldn’t remember all the descriptives that were equally funny. It’s really a hazard to have nudist commercials on the radio.

Nudist colonies have never appealed to me but I did visit a (non-sanctioned) bathing suit optional beach when I was young. Sunburns are not great anytime… they are especially bad ALL OVER.

I had no idea we have a nudist colony around here! Not my cup of tea for sure! You might want to investigate St. Lukes for a gym. It was a great place with all kinds of classes and fitness programs. They have reopened. (And you would pass Starbucks on your way home!)

If it’s more than 5 minutes, it’s too far and it has to be covered by my health insurance. The nudist camp has been here for decades. It doesn’t advertise much, at least in places that I see. The radio ad was too much! I giggled all the way home!

So far, my family hasn’t been hit by COVID. It’s just a matter of time, though–I have a crazy uncle whose current pet conspiracy theory is anti-mask.

Are you friggin’ serious, Kate, the “Two Nuts?!” This alone would make me drive into a tree. I am always grateful everyone still healthy with my friends and family. You mentioned gym, my Bikram Yoga studio reopened. I used to go almost daily and it really helped on many levels, especially mentally and my marshmallow body. Despite a very clean, conscientious studio before COVID and I hear even more now, I do not feel comfortable returning to the sweat and heavy breathing right now.

My gym had been open about 2 weeks before they closed again because of the rent dispute. I hadn’t gone in yet. During the summer I have enough yard work and other exercise stuff that it’s not as critical. I will especially miss it in September when my marshmallow body will be apparent.

Sad about your gym. Things are slowly returning to normal here. My son is visiting from London for the weekend and the twins have gone out with plastic containers to pick blackberries. They have promised me crumble for tea. We are just keeping our fingers crossed that the schools can reopen safely in September.

We have a nudist place about 12 miles north. Never been and not planning on going, but it is an interesting option I guess for some who want to pay $42 a day to be naked. 🙂 Sorry about your gym, and it seems like there are more and more empty strip malls today. It’s hard to answer, what have you been doing, because it is the same old, same old at least here. 🙂 Stay well.
