Whoa Nelly! – When did it get to be August? Where is my summer? I want a do-over! I didn’t realize that the cancellation of all the festivals and shows, many of which I didn’t attend, would affect me so. It’s no summer without all that going on even if it’s in the background.

Done, done, done – This week the beloved husband had the second cataract eye surgery. The first was two weeks ago. It’s a fairly simple procedure but there is some blurriness and “something in the eye” feeling to deal with. He upgraded to the lens insert with the ability to adjust for close-up reading. So far he’s pretty happy although he needs a few more days for the blurriness in the second eye to clear. Can’t believe that the perfect time was during covid-19.

Lost, energy pack. If you find it please call. – Upbeat and frivolous energy was last seen early in the year strutting its stuff. It took off at the beginning of lock down and hasn’t be seen yet. I miss it. Please come back.

It happened here – A customer was denied entrance into a store because he didn’t have a mask on (mandatory in my state). The staff bent over backwards, offering to put his order together and deliver it to him outside in his car. Nope, he went back to his pick-up truck (why do weird people tend to drive them?), got his gun (unlicensed) and shot at the employee. He is now in jail with several felony charges hanging over him. Was it really worth it?

The covid thought for the day — Wait a second, you’re telling me my chance of surviving all this is directly linked to the common sense of others? You’re kidding, right? I’m doomed!

  1. My husband had his cataract surgery about 9 months ago and it has certainly helped. I’m glad your husband was able to get it done; I know people who are afraid to go to the doctor right now.

    • They eye doc had protocols in place. Also, it’s not a place you go to get treated for colds, flu or those types of illnesses. I went to the dentist and that was scarier but I was surprised at all the things they did including made me do a mouthwash with a Peroxyl solution to kill viruses.

      • I’m glad I got my teeth cleaned right before the shut down, but I’ll be going back soon. Thanks for the insight for what they can do. And I can see that a surgery center for ophthalmology would seem safe. Best wishes for his recovery!

  3. Glad to hear your hubby’s cataract surgery went well. That’s always a scary thing, even if it is routine. A 73yr old was killed by the police here…he refused to wear a mask in a store, got abusive to the staff, drove off, police followed him home, he came out with a gun, and threatened them, so they shot him. The police do shoot too quickly, but dead over a mask? This is relatively unusual for us here as most Canadians are cooperative souls. And yes, I do believe he drove a pickup truck.

  4. Yes, for some reason crazies tend to come in trucks. Amazingly all the gun laws in the world don’t stop them. I’m beginning to think many of them are suffering from “brain rot”. Too much alcohol and reality shows.

  6. If only Common Sense was as common as water and air. Sigh. I was with my grandkids when August 1 occurred and I moaned out loud “OH NOOOO. I hate August 1.” They were aghast. WHY? They asked. “Because it means the end of summer.” They were quiet for a moment and then said, “Not this year!!” (The start of their school year has been postponed until September 15.) So, maybe I don’t have to moan until September 1?? 🙂

  15. You are right, Kate, I am noticing more of the Summer cancellations as time progresses. I am happy to hear your husband’s surgery went well. My husband and I talk about the energy thing almost daily. “Covid fatigue.” And, we are still the lucky ones. Total yuck on the gun/mask thing. Lots of small things around here. Met our children at a camp/lake spot for the day. We did not feel comfortable and left early. Still, the lucky ones, so far.

  16. I love your “thought for the day.” Hilarious!

    Summer always goes too fast–this one especially. As each summer draws to an end, I always feel sad and a little bit guilty that I haven’t taken full advantage of that beautiful time.

    I take it the man with the unlicensed gun missed. Is the aimed-for employee okay?

    • The employee is ok but rattled. He did shoot a policeman and was shot in return. Both will survive. It’s insane. BTW I got a comment that said we are all responsible for our own health. Written by someone who doesn’t understand the transmission process.

  17. At least the cataract surgery is done now … I read what you said about “upgrading the lens insert” – just Googled around and I did not realize that some people won’t need glasses afterward. I would likely need them as I have an astigmatism. My friend Ann Marie who has had cataract surgery, did not wear glasses before, at 76 years old. I’ve not seen her in a couple of years, but she sent me a photo of herself holding a 12-pack of toilet paper that she was happy to find at the grocery store early on in the pandemic and she was not wearing glasses. I got my glasses on my 7th birthday. We have our share of “Covidiots” here in Michigan. One killed a security guard at a dollar store over the mask rule. A simple thing and most stores here even offer one if the reason you arrive unmasked is you don’t have one.

      • I never knew that about cataract surgery correcting your vision – I just thought it was strictly to remove the cloudiness over your eye. I had better start reading my AARP magazines – I have a large pile of them that I was saving until closer to Medicare and SS time … Medicare is next year. We think Summer went by fast. Here I am thinking about Medicare. Yes, guns are way too handy. We have a freeway shooter and they don’t know if it is one person or a copycat. Sixteen random shootings on Detroit-area expressways since mid-June. We’ve had three deaths of young kids from them or other kids playing with loaded handguns.
        The world is just too crazy for my liking right now.

  20. I think you’re in a big pretty big lost of energy club these days. Thank God for those walks in the morning.
    I don’t understand people and their refusal to wear a mask, enough to go get a gun and fire it. Obviously, he’s not a well man.

  21. Cataract surgery is probably in my future so I’m always happy to hear about positive results.

    I don’t get the idiots with guns (and, yes, they usually drive trucks) who insist on demanding their “freedoms” while not allowing others to practice theirs. A store (or restaurant) has the right to state their rules and refuse service to anyone who won’t comply. The solution is so easy: comply or take your business elsewhere. I’m so glad that no one was hurt.

    • In this morning’s paper, it said when the police went to pick him up, he got at them wounding one. He was shot too. So stupid. The whole thing is so stupid. My husband got the upgrade multifocal lens insert and so far he’s pretty happy with it. It will take a couple more weeks for the clarity to settle down but then he won’t need reading glasses. Unfortunately when I had my eyes done, they were just coming out and no one really knew how well they would work.

  22. Covid thought of the day is my thought of every day lately. Other people have been endangering me, and I am getting angrier and angrier. Loss of control over your life is one thing, but loss of control due to stupidity and selfishness is another.

  23. Oh, reading about that shooting makes me so sad. I’m not sure what has made being asked to wear a mask the hill people want to die on. It’s such a small thing and well within a business’s right to make this a rule for their walk-in customers, no matter what the municipal/state/federal rule or advice is. As a customer, you have every right to take your money elsewhere if it bugs you that much!

  25. Oh that paragraph about finding ones energy….I am also looking for mine. Everytime I think ah ha it’s back, poof it’s gone.
    My dear friend lives right up the street from the gun incident. Very scary stuff. And sooo sad too. Not sure, but I think that even in some of the United States’ darkest time, we did not have to fear for our lives and safety the way we do now. We had disease outbreaks and we worried about the disease. Not the disease and some crazy with a gun. We had the great depression…we worried about how we would feed our families, not some kook with a gun. The folks that became so desperate and despondent killed themselves. Not their fellow man. I wonder…is this a worldwide problem or just here?

    • I don’t know what it is. When people got angry at each other they would throw a punch. Now they shoot. In today’s paper, it turns out the guy had an AK47 illegally and shot a policeman when they tried to take him in. Over a face mask?

  27. Hooray for the Beloved in getting those procedures done in spite of all the “potholes” in the way right now. He must feel a sense of relief for completing both procedures. Your last comment is mine also. We wear masks for the benefit of others, so it does scare me that I’m dependent on that. – Marty

    • He had the cataracts last year but his eye doc didn’t push it, saying he could wait. So….we had to do it during the pandemic. There were some weird things, like they wanted me to wait for 2 hours in a 100+ degree car or go shopping in the mall rather than wait with my kindle in their waiting room.

  30. I suppose it should be shocking that male Americans equate following rules for the good of society as oppression. But it’s the logical result of years of conservative propaganda extolling American exceptionalism, misogyny, gun ownership, and, especially, aggressively exalting ignorant opinions over science and education.

  33. If you find the energy packs, let me know because I’m not headed to check out walking in place. 🙂 Glad the surgery went well. I’ve been there and done that and hope to not do it again in this lifetime. A lot of us could be classified as nuts, but most of us keep it in check. This guy apparently doesn’t have a filter, he probably mentally damaged that employee for the rest of his/her life, and now you’ll get to pay for a trial and three hots and a cot for the foreseeable future.

    • The business owner said the focus right now is on his employees who were shook up. It’s hard enough to manage these necessary changes but to get push back (with a gun) is very scary. BTW it was a cigar shop. So seriously?

  36. Good grief! The real weirdos are coming out from hiding during the pandemic – they are everywhere. I haven’t seen a confrontation yet about mask wearing but I know it’s gonna happen because the anti-mask brigade just doesn’t care. Well I do…..and most people do. Makes those weirdos stand out more than ever! Glad your hubby’s second cataract is gone…..recovery takes a while from what I heard but it’s sOOO worth it (so I’ve heard) – one of these days my “not ripe yet” cataracts will come out and I’ll know first hand. Hang in there…………energy will be back (I hope!).

    • Our area isn’t particularly violent like that. I’m sure there are some folks harboring conspiracy theories but you don’t hear about them and they don’t shoot at people. This was so crazy because there was no way it could end good. If you don’t want to wear a mask, don’t go in the store. They will bring you what you want. Period.

  38. Unbelievable about the guy without the mask and with the gun. I do not understand this particular brand of craziness at all. And now the guy is in jail, radically increasing his chances of catching the virus!
