Designated shopper – In our family the beloved husband and I are the designated grocery shoppers. Maybe it’s because we are healthy or maybe expendable. Who knows? Every week it gets more “interesting.” At first there were just marks on the floor keeping customers apart in check-out lines. Today there was a queue outside as they are limiting customers inside. I wonder what’s next.

Homicides – This week I told the beloved husband that if I was quarantined with anyone else there would be a homicide. Somehow we work together. Only one of us is allowed to be “nuts” at a time while the other is soothing. Guess which one is mostly soothing!

Say what? – I saw am “ambulette” this week. That’s what it said on the side of the vehicle. It was a short minivan. It wasn’t long enough to have a hospital gurney in it. Maybe it’s a taxi for sick people.

A new take on conspiracy theories – This week I saw that Roseanne Barr thinks the covid-19 is a government conspiracy to get rid of boomers. Yikes! It’s also taking other age groups. Collateral damage?

An unscratchable itch – When you are told you can’t touch your face or after you put your mask on, you suddenly have uncontrollable itching. You never have that when it’s not mentioned. Why is this?

  1. My conspiracy theory is that it’s Mother Nature who is trying to kill us.

    She decided that all the wild weather – floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes – wasn’t working fast enough, so she discovered how to weaponize. After working out the kinks with SARS, H1N1, etc, she finally found a great formula with COVID-19. Now it’s open warfare.

    That’s my theory. Husband thinks I have now lost it completely.

  4. Encouraging news about Mollie. The vets are open here, but you call when arrive, someone runs out and picks up animal, back inside, then phone “conference” and pet returned to car. We are not comfortable with that as we’ve had a couple of bad experiences by techs (there’s multiple vets – ours is good, but others not…who knows who is there if you can’t see) and we do not trust if we aren’t there. And congenial Molly doesn’t trust only of them any more. She is due for a check up for summer heartworm meds and we aren’t sure how we are going to handle it…
    Rosanne is and always has been odd and disgusting.

    • I don’t have a choice about Mollie but I feel like you do. This is a new specialist doc and I’d really like to meet her first. Next Tuesday is the apt. and she is going in prepped for an endoscopy. She’s on the old side for anesthesia so I’m worried but if in the end we get a more first diagnosis that allows us to medicate properly (we’ve been trying things and it’s like throwing jelly to a wall and seeing what sticks!), it will be worth it. There is always the chance we’ll lose her but she’s uncomfortable for much of the time now. Boogers. Aging pets.

  5. Hi Kate, I suspect it is because you are smart and healthy and NOT expendable. My husband and I have been taking turns going “nuts” so far. Hopefully this continues. Unfortunately, Roseanne is not the only one who thinks this way. I rapidly “unfollow” people who believe 50% of the population should be culled. Exceptionally negative and unkind. I think I have given you past count downs. Today 29 days no friends, no family, no stores. I am planning to head out early tomorrow. I would love some fresh supplies. Hopefully, no uncontrollable itching. The mummy suit is ready.🙂

    • If there is culling, I have a list to propose! Unfortunately we are seeing deaths of all ages with and without underlying health issues. Makes me wonder how those minds work that come up with outrageous ideas. We are good for groceries but have to pick up prescriptions and get gas today. Then it’s back to hunkering down!

  6. How could i not read a post with “nut jobs” in the title?! hahahahaha Let’s not forget the cats. Can you imagine being locked up with just your husband and NO CATS. I think that would sour a good marriage! I glanced at two of mine in their trees in front of the window and ICK the window is filthy! On the outside. I could go clean that. I better conserve my strength for these three meals a day every day nonstop that I have been doing and complaining about.

  7. Rosanne has always been a little off the grid, as most comedians tend to be, mostly in a good way. But she’s crazy. You’d think after what happened last time she’d just be quiet but that would be asking too much.
    That happens all the time with itching. like when you’re getting a test done and they tell you you can’t move. Drives me crazy.

  8. My human’s store is doing that too. And only allowing one person in at a time. One per family I mean so no more shopping with someone. This hurts me most because that means she leaves the little humans at home and I get no alone time anymore. They are cramping my style. Happy Easter.

  9. I never cared for Roseanne Barr – her big mouth got her off that show. I like her less if she is doing “Hey Boomer” remarks. I have never heart of an ambulette?! At our stores in Michigan, they are cordoning off non-essential items in the store, including the nursery area, so people cannot buy trimmer string, yard waste bags, even charcoal and lighter fluid. People are livid and have circulated appeals on Twitter and Facebook calling for her impeachment. A good many people, who are not shoppers, are angry that one may canoe or kayak, but not start up a motorboat.

    • The can do’s and can’t do’s seem odd. We can buy guns but not cars. If you need a car you can buy one from the next state. Our township is cleaning streets but we are not allowed in the parks. Some garden centers may open (if they have a hardware section) but not the ones that don’t. So everyone is buying flowers at really odd places these days. There is a lot of complaining going on and they may revisit the allowable list. Access is tightening up. My husband needed something to fix a problem. Home Depot had a line outside queuing up for entry so he went to a small hardware store on the other side of town. There was only one customer inside. They were cleaning the counter and pen after each customer. It seemed safer in the long run.

      • Interesting how they have done your do’s and don’ts. We have online car buying too but they do deliver to your home and leave it there with no actual interaction, all buying/financing online. There are now 100,000 people have signed the petition to remove the Governor – it is no. 1 on our local news, usurping the incoming windstorm and COVID-19 stats (we are 3 or 4 for bad stats). I agree with what she has done, but then I live alone and work from home, so my situation is different.
        Everything has become a little unreal and just heard that Trump has tweeted out a message and used a hashtag to remove Fauci as Fauci does not want to open the economy on 05/01 – enough worries without that going on. We have some bad weather moving in today with 55-60 mph winds. The world and weather are surreal these days. Are you part of these big wind gusts? We usually have out-of-town crews, but since so many states have the high wind warnings, not to mention twelve states having tornado issues yesterday, and not to mention the linemen must work six feet apart, it will be an interesting day. Our high winds began in about 2 hours. My bandanas I ordered have been floating around USPS for three days – we only get USPS deliveries in our zip code every other day – the box will be delivered at the height of the wind gusts, I have no doubt. 🙂

        • We are having monsoon type winds right now. Weather has been surreal. I hadn’t heard about your gov. Our gov has done a good job for the most part. It’s a tough situation. People’s lives or jobs. That’s the decision and your view depends on whether you own the business or not. We get a lot of deliveries here but some are weird. I have had a small one sit in Indiana for a week now. I can see it’s progress on line. Seems like the ones that take the longest are the ones you want the most. Others come in two days.

          • We had those winds all day and mercifully they died down about an hour ago and very few power outages and happily I am unscathed. The movement versus the Governor has intensified and now there will be a rally against her on Wednesday. She asked people to cancel it due to social distancing and the need to have police presence, but it is still on at the capitol building. I have no issue with how she is handling this at all – better to be safe than sorry. She gave a press conference today and acknowledged that she was sorry and “gets” it and senses the frustration, but we have to hang in this together. Our stats decreased a little in the past 24 hours, but, an epidemiologist was on the radio and said it may be a hopeful flattening of the curve, but more likely people did not want to leave their families to go and get diagnosed after feeling symptoms. My package did come before the winds raged. I’m done for a while now.

  10. I’ve been doing pickup for my groceries or delivery, so I’m not sure how they’re keeping down the crowds in the store. I do know I’m having trouble getting scheduled. Pickup and delivery are just too popular. Our part of WA State is starting to flatten the curve, but we still have lots of cases.

    I, too, am discovering lots of itchy places on my face.

    I’ve been kept busy with lots of phone calls and invites to Zoom meetings. Even though I live alone, I’m not bored.

    • I am so honored. As a writer yourself, you know that you are most critical of your own work. When this covid-19 thing started, I wasn’t sure what I would write about without out the ability to go out and about and see people. I would be doomed to drivel. I’m finding that there is a lot to write about even when the most exciting trip is going to the grocery store wrapped up like a mummy. What I love most about your blog is the normalcy of everyday life. Right now that’s what I need.

  13. Roseanne Barr keeps opening her mouth and reminding everyone what an idiot she is. We’ve heard that a couple of our larger local grocery stores have added aisle arrows. I think that’s a good idea… but we still aren’t shopping. We’ve signed up for a few online deliveries (including wine 🙂 ) and we had a pretty good stock of meats and other items in our freezer so so far, so good. There haven’t been any meltdowns in our house but my husband and I have been extra kind and forgiving of each other and ourselves. Happy to hear that Mollie is doing better.

  15. We’ve limited our grocery shopping to ‘curb side pickup’ once every two weeks. On our last pick up, 1/2 of the order that was put in our car belong to someone else (the big bag of dogfood was the first give-away). After that got straightened out, we went on our way, got home, and realized some of our items were still missing. Back to the store we went again. The store manager offered us two free pizzas and a free package of paper towels. We totally understood that staff are under incredible stress and mixups happen. Still we accepted the pizza and the PTs. Who wouldn’t?

  16. Rosanne Barr is disgusting. She is not funny (never was), she is cruel, she is tasteless…and above all she doesn’t have two brain cells to cause a synapse to occur.
    I am doing another curb-side pick up today. But, even doing that has me crazy. I am hoping to not have to go into a food store until this over.
    And by the way, I think itching is more contagious then yawning. At least for me…just mention itch..and yup I’m there. No explanation at all!

    You’re right about touching the mask! My wife finished sewing some last week, and they’re really great. But mine kept slipping down under my nose because I didn’t tighten it enough, and I kept having to raise it. Sort of defeats the purpose! 🙂 – Marty

  19. We just went for a walk on a VERY deserted beach ~ we walked about a mile and passed (maybe) 20 people total. We made French Toast for Brunch ~ using a symbolic egg. The Easter Bunny dropped by with chocolate earlier this week. :mrgreen:

    In other news:

    Our Publix grocery stores have one way arrows in the aisles ~ no backtracking.
    Fresh Market is mandating masks for ALL shoppers starting Tuesday.
    Boats ramps are reopening tomorrow.
    Beaches still closed (except for essential walks, like ours this a.m.).
    Schools may open in May.
    Still no word about when toilet paper will return to the shelves in previously accustomed quantities.

    The editor of a local paper opined that we should reopen EVERYTHING and deal with the virus per Darwin’s theory of survival of the fittest. Maybe he’s one of the conspirators behind Roseanne’s theory?

    On that note, hope your Easter is filled with pleasant surprises, Kate.

    • Haven’t seen one way aisles yet but I can’t help feeling it may go that way. Grocery aisles aren’t wide enough for a 6′ distance when you are passing. Schools are closed for the rest of the year. One thing I always remember. My grandfather died in the 1918 flu epidemic. He died at home with his wife and kids tending him. None of them got the flu and they wore no masks. He was 40 and healthy. Makes no sense to me at all. I’m a fan of Darwin but it’s not always the weak that get culled. Sadly I don’t have a nearby beach but today the weather is supposed to be good enough for an outside walk (we’ve been having monsoon winds and cold temps the last few days — you know spring in the northeast!). I’m pumped for my walk. Steaks on the grill today. No family 😦 but I get to see my bro when I drop off stuff. Stay safe!

  22. It may be just a matter of time until temperatures being taken upon entering all grocery stores will be required. As for conspiracy stories, best to avoid them like the plague, particularly anything with the name Roseanne Barr attached to it. #cuckooforcocoapuffs

  25. Roseanne Barr clearly has not seen that the virus carries a higher mortality rate for Black Americans than anyone else. The wealthy white boomers in the country and suburbs are better able to isolate. Well, those smart enough to NOT go to church.

    How does she explain China, Italy, and Spain?

    • She doesn’t have to make sense. She just is. There have been a lot of nursing home deaths for people in the older generation and locally some of the deaths are in the 40 to 50 age range. The safest group seems to be the young ones. We had a 50 year old healthy guy (no underlying health issues) die. What’s with that. It’s what makes it scary.

  26. We have had the queues outside supermarkets for a while. I think most people enjoy a chance to chat. We also have to guess what the shops think are essential purchases. I have ordered an essentials box for delivery on Tuesday and it includes Percy Pigs (a sort of soft sweet).
    Our local supermarket is closing at random times when they get a delivery to give them a chance to restock. We are having to be more inventive cooking but are still eating well.

    • We are doing ok. At this point it’s more of an inconvenience than a severe problem. If you can’t get one thing, another will do. I feel guilty complaining as I’m sure there are places with severe shortages.

  27. We have ordered groceries to be delivered for the first time. Comes a week from today, and will hopefully hold us for two weeks. We’ll see how that goes!

  28. HAHAHA….well, we all have found our way through the maze of “weird” with this virus haven’t we. On the Roseann Barr theory – all I can say is “consider the source” !! The unscratchable itch has confounded humankind for centuries….it’s like when you leave the house after packing the car up and pulling out of the driveway to go on vacation all of a sudden you need to use the restroom. Amazing times we live in…………..hope to go back to the OTHER WAY one day soon though. Happy Easter.

  29. Ah, the shopping. Our supermarkets are only allowing one person to a trolley, so a couple won’t be admitted together. When we first came across this, the guy n the door was very apologetic, but said although we would be admitted separately, we could ‘meet up’ inside. Seems that is not the case now, and only one person is allowed to shop. Er, is that why some couples now get a trolley each and load them both up?
    You and your husband have the same approach as us, allowed to have our down days, just not at the same time.
    We have a lot of taxi companies here and they are busy, but no signs for ambulettes.
    As for baby boomers, ask me in nine months.
    And you’re right about the itch! Masks and I do not get on, but I will wear one if I want to go in a shop. I almost had a panic attack last week and was glad to get back to the car and take it off. Judging by the breaths and pants, anyone would have thought I was in labour!

    • I have an infrequent dry cough. I’ve had it since January so it’s not the virus. I am terrified I’ll cough in a store and they’ll ride me out on a rail! Maybe even tar and feather me! Mollie is doing very well. She’s had quite the turn around. I’m still taking her to the specialist to see if we can find a root cause. Otherwise this will happen again and I can’t get in right away unless I go to an ER vet (cha-ching, cha-ching).

      • I’ve had a tickly cough some mornings for well over a year so I’m not worried either as i got it checked out at the time and my lungs were clear. I know what you men though, and heaven forbid if I or anyone near me sneezes! Run for the hills!! I’m not at the stage where I’m afraid to go out yet, but I am avoiding people by a lot more than 6 feet.
        Glad Mollie is doing OK. We turned a corner with Maggie this morning, a solid formed ‘poo’ though still soft, and a good colour instead of bright yellow!!
