Random 5 for August 25 – Perspective, imports, comfort food, clothing, new blog

This is mature skin!

Mature skin? – I found an article on caring for mature skin. I was excited to read it. The author considered 40 year-old’s to have mature skin. Yikes! They are just babes! Has she seen the Helen Mirren ads for L’Oreal? Now that’s mature skin! #yougoHelen #youthinkyourskiniswrinklednowjustwait

Techie equipment – I bought a power bank for my cell phone. If I forget to charge it, I could use it on the go. This is a painful process for me. Which one is best? Will it work? The usual insecurities pop up. When it came, there was a 2” x 2” (really tiny) instruction book written in print as big as fly speck. I had to get out my lighted magnifying glass to read it. There were lots of different languages from which to choose. The wordage was interesting. Obviously written by someone who had English as their 27th language. I wish they would have given a website instead. #grammarpolicewithbifocalsneeded #surehopeitworks

How I know fall is coming – Just as I craved grilled foods, watermelon and corn on the cob in June, I now want spaghetti. Not the kind with fresh veggies (which I love) but the one with the cooked sauce. Next it will be stews! #saucessoupsstewscometomama

The other clue – I’m tired of my summer clothes. I keep eyeing up my new fall top that I can’t wait to wear! I’m just like a kid waiting to wear new clothes on the first day of school! #donthaveathingtowear

Calling all crazy cat people – I found a new cat blog that is sassier than my Sassy Cats. Here is the link to try it for yourself! Poly Morse is my human #funnierthanme

So how was your week? What makes you yearn for fall?

  1. Fall is my favorite season, even if it means Winter is on the way. I love the sweatshirts and heavier clothes, the colors, the smells. My mom, would get fresh green beans and declare it was “stew time” … that would be this time of year too. Forty is mature skin – no words about that and when I was a teenager and in my early twenties, I washed my face with Murphy Soap as I read somewhere it helped cut grease. My skin is just as slick and shiny now that I am 63 as it was when I battled how to keep my T-zone from shining through my makeup by lunchtime. Have you ever seen this commercial for Dove chocolate about getting older Kate? My friend asked me and I don’t have TV so I found it … now this commercial showing an older was so well done (in my opinion anyway): https://adage.com/creativity/work/each-and-every-day/48730

  2. What?! Summer’s almost over? But I haven’t worn all my summer clothes yet. We didn’t have a very hot summer. So I still wore my jeans a lot.

Helen Mirren has such a pleasant face, doesn’t she? She must have a great love for life.

    Spaghetti sounds good.

  3. I’m not quite ready for fall yet, Kate. I don’t know what it will take for me to let go of summer. I don’t love the heat, but I think this summer just went by too quickly and I’m afraid that fall leads to the end of the year. LOL! I’m not ready yet!

Forty years old is mature skin? Thank God for women like Helen Mirren…she’s my kind of beautiful! 🙂

    • I like Helen too. She has a potty mouth that is hysterical! If your skin isn’t nice at 40, you are doomed! End of year? NOOOOO! All I’m looking for is some decent weather. Our heat wave broke but now it’s dreary, waiting for rain. Just a couple of consecutive nice days will do!

  4. Well, we’re under extreme heat advisory today (even the dogs visibly droop after begging to go outside and it’s so dreadful)
Still it must the the sun’s angle, I’m ready for fall colors (regular fall seasonal clothes are possible until late Oct…but colors…please! Mom used to start hunting Autumn colored clothes in end of July as there were so few in stores that were light weight and short sleeved). I’ve held off until the upcoming weekend to pack away the light obviously spring clothes. But I’m ready.
And ready for warm, not cold, basil tomato soup, chili, and spaghetti!

    • I don’t think we hit 70 today. In comparison last Thursday was 89. My body is bouncing back and forth. Tonight I am wearing real fall with a long sleeved thicker tee and long pants. This year was not at all typical. Tomato basil soup! One of my favs!

  5. I start getting hungry for thick soups and stews, roasted veggies, and – yes! – pumpkin spiced almost every thing!
I don’t even read the older skin articles. They just depress me, and I’m not going to do any of that stuff anyway. 🙂

    • Each season has their draw. I love the fresh root veggies roasted. New potatoes, yum! I like pumpkin bread and pumpkin cookies. Those articles won’t tell you anything you don’t already know. Eat right, exercise and watch your weight. Keep your face clean without overly scrubbing and use moisturizer and sunblock always. There I saved you from reading the whole article. Oh yes, don’t expect your skin to look like it did 20 years ago.

  6. Forty mature skin? FORTY! Sorry for yelling, but come on. That was my favorite age. I looked and felt my best when I turned forty, and I was still getting carded.

Good to know I’m not the only one who looks forward to the season change.

    • I loved my 40’s too. I still got carded. No more acne and I was a lot more self-confident. My skin was wonderful although I worked with a woman who was all full of crow’s feet at 40. It’s in your genes and unless you do laser or other treatments, it is what it is.

  7. We have two power banks and find them useful. When John goes to one train club in Middle Tennessee, he operates his train all day far from a power source. When his phone whimpers, he puts the phone in one pocket of the bib overalls and the power bank in the other. Painless!

    • Here’s the thing…I bought the power bank because my cell phone battery was lasting about 24 hours. I did some clean out work on it (I never use the thing so I didn’t have much to clean out) and now I’m on day 4 without recharging. I will never understand techie stuff. I deleted my hearing aid app and turned off notifications from the mother ship of the phone. That’s it! Now I probably won’t use it unless I travel.

    • I bought a really pretty rugby shirt. It’s not a sweatshirt or a sweater but a heavy knit that will be great for the transition seasons well into winter. Can’t wait to wear it but I also don’t want it to get cold. Sigh!

    • I can’t say it’s my favorite. I’m partial to spring. After the winter I’m almost giddy when we get that first warm day. However, spring has been absent the past few years. I love the winter foods. Long cooked and full of flavor.

  8. OMG! Thanks for the shout out. The next round of Friskies is on me! Tuna treats for all!! My human loves Helen Mirren but her problem is more sagging skin than wrinkles but I can’t tell her that, she might switch me to cheap cat food. Thanks a million again. Love you sassy cats!!

  9. We have had a pretty mild summer here in coastal SoCal. It’s just now starting to heat up. I won’t be thinking about fall food or warmer clothes for a few months… and of course by then all the good stuff is gone from the stores. I’m counting the days until the kids (other people’s; we don’t have any) go back to school and it gets less crowded everywhere #gobacktoschoolwhereyoubelong

  10. About the time I want fall, it starts to heat up in Southern California. So, like, today. It’ll be 2 months before I can even think about long sleeves and yet the apples and fall clothing catalogs have arrives. #allmessedup

    • I love Helen. She has a bit of a potty mouth which on a 70 something lady is funny! I found a meatloaf recipe with a twist so it will be on the menu in the next week or so. It requires the oven so it will depend. Spaghetti is a top of the stove dish.

  11. Try You Tube for your tech. issues. There is usually more then one and you can choose. Did the roast thing last night. Thought it would not be season appropriate, but mother nature cooperated!

  12. Dame Helen is stunning isn’t she. Hope I look as good (or my skin does) at her age.
Funny you should mention stew……. we had a three day stew this week as I was tired of food and thinking up what to have for dinner. In theory then, I’ve actually had two days off! Have a good week!

    • I love the fall weather when it’s cooler but the earth is still warm better than spring when the air is warmer but the earth is still cold. However it is the beginning of the long cold snap we get here. A power bank is like an extra battery you can plug into if your phone runs out. It’s small and you can carry it. It’s helpful especially when you travel.

  13. I’ll admit it – I’m definitely a FALL/SPRING kinda girl…..coolish air, sweaters, socks, feeling FRESH…..SUMMER/WINTER are just too extreme for me. Sweaty, sticky summer and mind-numbing cold are NOT my friends. In truth, I might be living in the perfect state for my “conditional comfort” – Virginia doesn’t have too much of any of those things I don’t like. Perhaps that’s why I’ve been living here since the 70s? Hope you get to wear that Fall top soon – maybe turn on the A/C and wear it in the house anyway (haha just kidding). Spaghetti? Oh yeah – that’s a “year round comfort food” for us.

    Hugs, Pam

    • After this summer, maybe I’m more of a shoulder season person myself. This summer was brutal with humidity, frequent rain and a lot of hot spells that ran into each other. Spaghetti is just a different form of pizza!

  14. I picked up a power bank at Costco a few years ago. Works great. Since then I’ve received a couple more as swag at work meetings and such. But the Costco one is the most powerful and my go-to.
I love this time of year as fall approaches. The air already feels different. And I love when the produce starts coming into the markets. I suddenly feel like cooking again! I mean really cooking – like giving my stovetop, oven and slow cookers a workout again. Bring. It. On.

    • Me too! I made a fresh peach pie yesterday (with homemade crust!) that was fabulous and I enjoyed every minute of making it. During the summer (especially this one), I would come up with things that didn’t taking cooking in the house or I could cook at 9 a.m. and reheat for suppertime. My cell phone battery has been wonky. Sometimes it holds a charge and sometimes it doesn’t. This is a good insurance policy! I have to “order ahead” for my Starbucks. There are priorities here! 🙂

  15. Spaghetti with meatballs… little meatballs from Publix that I pop in the sauce! I miss my jeans and boots. I miss having a glass of wine and Havarti while sitting next to a fall fire. I miss my sweats! But I love a walk on Venice Beach and the palms that welcome me home to the Tiny Casa and Grouper sandwiches alfresco! Have a lovely Sunday Kate!

    • There are great things about each season that we yearn for. I like fleece and flannel and hearty foods yet come March I really want grilled food, sandals and clothes that don’t weigh a ton. As for a walk on the beach, I love that anytime! My nearing beach is 3 hours which isn’t bad but it takes planning.

  16. I love ‘nesting’ in the fall, making and freezing all of those delicious soups and stews for the upcoming winter season. I also like the cooler temperatures, the change of the way the air around us smells, campfires/bonfires/fire pits, and the amazing produce that is reaped for the fall. I love driving around and noticing the flamboyancy of Mother Nature as the leaves change into a vibrant visual palette. And yes, I like that kids go back to school and aren’t running around town all day, seven days a week. Although I suffer from SAD every fall/winter, the beauty of fall and the rebirthing of spring help make it tolerable.

    • It’s really winter that I don’t like. I wouldn’t mind it if it lasted 6 weeks or so but we have a good 4 months of it here. I love boxing up those kids in school again. Everything seems so much more peaceful!
