Random 5 for May 7 – Hairy legs, S’mores, safety, aging, regrets

Sheep shearing Source: Wikipedia

Get out the machete! – Like many other women, I’m not as good at shaving my legs during the winter. No it’s not laziness, it’s for warmth. Then spring breaks (sort of). You get in line at one of the places that shear sheep and get a professional job done. You manicure your toes so you look sexy in your peep toe shoes and a bitter cold front moves in. And hangs around for far too long! Boogers!

It happens every year – The reason for the colder than normal weather is that Starbucks came out with their fabulous S’mores Frappuccino. It’s one of the two I like. Most of their specialty drinks are waaayyy too sweet but there is something about S’mores. They only offer it from May (when it’s cold) until the end of July (during the perfect weather for S’mores). Then they come out with pumpkin everything and Christmas trinkets. That and I took off my flannel sheets. That does it every time too.

A sign of the times – We have a local amusement park that is pretty nice. It’s a small Disney World. This year they are adding metal detectors at the entrance. How sad is that?

You know you are getting older – When you tell your friend that you’d prefer a nice coffee to a frou-frou alcoholic drink. I want to say getting old stinks but I really like a nice mocha latte.

What everyone is talking about – There have been a few postings about regrets people have at the end of their life. I had dinner with some friends a few weeks ago. One, at age 72, has had some major health issues including two different kinds of cancer. He is very open about death. When it happens, he’s cool with it. He has had a good life. He’s done what he wants and routinely tells people he loves them. He doesn’t need to see another sunrise or reconnect with someone he eliminated from his life ages ago. What about you? Would you have regrets?

So how was your week?

  1. It is a cool spring…85F today. Each year the flannel sheets stay on longer and longer…AC at night makes thing cozy HAHA
Sigh. Starbucks is having afternoon specials, but since ours located 3 blocks down the road, it’s crowded all the time – the high school, middle school, and intermediate school complexes are just across the street. The plus side is there’s now a drive thru.
The son of a very old family that once owned and ran Playland Park (an old fashioned low key amusement park that was popular from 1940’s-1960’s before closing) are building a small amusement park for not far from here. It will be aimed at the very young/elementary school ages. We hope it will be so small and boring that the older kids, gangs, and thugs ignore it. We so desperately need some innocent places for little kids to enjoy.

    • I long for 85F! Every year I swear I will not take off the flannel sheets until July yet here I am freezing for the first minute or two until things warm up. Sure hope they don’t need metal detectors for that park.

  2. I don’t know that I have regrets. Anything that I did that I may regret taught me a lesson I didn’t repeat. We all make mistakes. I suppose the trick is not to repeat them or get deeper into the mud.

    • I think people sometimes regret not doing things that are more fun loving — travel, spending more time with the family, that sort of thing. I agree with you. My whoppers taught me a lot that I wouldn’t have learned any other way.

  3. Snorts with piggy laughter. Mom likes to refer this time of the year as Spring Harvesting in shaving her legs. It hasn’t happened yet. So we are all taking bets here at the Hotel Thompson when she will do it. I tell you, we have such a life! A couple of months ago mom/dad were talking about what they wanted to do once mom retires. Mom got this look on her face and told dad, “Why wait? Something could happen tomorrow with the planning of the future. We gotta live today!” And thus, we have a surprise coming in September at the Hotel Thompson. XOXO – Bacon

  4. I learned today of another old friend who died this past week. It does seem important to frequently assess if regrets are present and then, if so, how to lighten the load. And Disneyland recently added metal detectors to their already very thorough bag searches. It makes me sad that my granddaughters have never known a time when they could enter their amusement parks or ballparks without being subjected to some security search. They don’t question a thing. It’s all they know! Have a good week, Kate, and enjoy a Starbucks specialty drink!

  5. I can’t remember the last time I shaved my legs to be honest. I gave my hair a trim the other day, does that count I wonder? As for regrets, no. Things I may have done differently perhaps, but no, no regrets. Life is good and I appreciate every day.

  6. I am a bath gal, no showers thank you, and shave my legs daily. Can’t stand that stubble when I put on my Jergen’s Extra Healing. Regrets… I don’t think I am going to have them because I really try to fix the things I regret that pop up now. Just better to make right the things I regret today. Your friend, I think he has the right idea. I would like to see a few more sunsets, fall seasons, spring peepers, and summer porch time though. I have to try one of those Mocha Lite Frappuccinos that Jill mentioned in her comment! The S’mores one, too!

    • A bath girl! I haven’t had one of those since a major surgery when I couldn’t get some parts wet. Tried to get a frap today but the place was jammed. I should have known better. Always busy weekend afternoons! The place is a goldmine!

  7. I shave and paint my toes all year round…I can’t help it…I have old model’s syndrome. I’ll be on my death bed getting a mani, pedi and a bikini wax…which brings up number 5…regrets…OOH..that I didn’t say I love you enough to those who are no longer…that’s a big one for me. To realize, and I mean really get the fact that in the end, all that shit we worry about really doesn’t matter. I may never get that one. Your friend is very brave to be ready to leave. I’m still packing.

Just came from Starbucks buying lemon pound cake, no s’mores…but you’re right, they’re a treat alright… sigh.

  9. Have you ever tried the Mocha Lite Frappuccino? It’s my go to summer treat at Starbucks. It’s an icy texture and only 120 calories. I love it and the kick it gives me.
I’m a year around shower shaver.
As for regrets…nope. I’m ready to go whenever it’s my time.
By the way, I sent you an email with the summer spotlight questions. I wanted to make sure it didn’t go to your junk folder.

  10. Shaving my legs has not been high on my to-do list these past few months. Now it’s beach weather – or it’s supposed to be – I must get that machete out! I’ll probably regret having waited so long… ~Elle

  11. Interestingly once I hit 50 I noticed I stopped growing as much hair. Now, at 62, it is even less. Unfortunately, that means less hair on my head too! Regrets, probably would have spent more time doing fun things in high school. I had a job and worked most days after school. Other than that, maybe save more money but if I did that I wouldn’t have my concert album so…no real regrets. Great post again Kate!

    • I never had a lot of hair on my legs nor was it dark and noticeable. That’s the good news! I wish I had worked harder in school. I was a good student who had great grades with little work. With work I would have been able to get a scholarship.

    • Those are things your kids would regret you not finishing too. I don’t have enough stuff from my Mom (long gone). I would kill for more pictures of her especially when she was young. I have less than 5 pictures of her under age 20 and only 2 under 15. Not many as an adult either. My parents never got a portrait taken. I have even less of my Dad. None of him under age 30.

    • I think about the time I waste on my hair and my face. I don’t have very hairy legs. I never was a daily shaver but there are is a lot of time I spent on trying to look better. I wonder if I will regret all the hair primping time wasted on my deathbed. Or will I be primping my hair and calling for Clairol?

      • I’m with you on the hair. For years I used to muss gel in my hair before I went to work, lest the damn cowlicks take over. Once I retired I abandoned that practice. But last week we went out to dinner, and for the first time in ages I put it back on again. I thought about all those years when I had to deal with it. Vanity is truly a waste sometimes. – Marty

  12. As far as regrets go, I’ve been thinking about that too . . . and I’m OK with the status quo. I think it was Robert Frost who, when asked how he would spend his last days on the planet, said:

“I would keep weeding my garden.”

I feel the same. If I only had 6 months to live . . . I would continue to enjoy the flow of life from moment to moment.

    • Me too. Perhaps it’s from being a cancer survivor. I try (and sometimes I fail….) to live in the moment and savor each thing as it happens no matter what it is. (Ok, maybe not dental visits.) If you really do that, there is no regret.

  13. I shave my legs every time I shower so I’ve never experienced “sheep shearing” in the Spring.

I know what you mean about metal detectors ~ but what would make you even sadder is that when entering our courthouse for jury duty you cannot bring in any liquids. No coffee. No bottled water. If you got a S’mores Frappuccino or Mocha Latte to keep you company while you wait and wait and wait to be summoned . . . you must *GASP* pour it out.

    • You live in the land of year round naked legs! 🙂 No coffee? I did federal jury duty once for two weeks, most of it just waiting to be picked. While we got long lunches, a nice mocha would have gone a long way to make me less cranky. The change in lifestyle is one of the painful adjustments to this new world.

  14. I rarely do my legs – when I have to show them to other people (only in very hot weather, as I usually were long jeans or at a visit to the doctor). And since it has been mostly under 10 ° C here (50 °F) I wasn’t tempted to wear anything else but closed shoes. Suffer for your vanity – last time I was vain, I wore some pumps-like ballerinas (very low heel, but with a tip) – and I paid dearly. I will not repeat the mistake. I think I have better things to do with my time than moaning about how my feet hurt or are icy.
