During the winter they will sleep in the beds but not now. They prefer to stretch out (it’s cooler) on the beds, tile, floor, etc. Whatever makes them happy!
And yet we keep buying more beds – trying to please. Ours want chairs with textured upholstery – all the better to rub off cat hair…which sticks like velcro to the chairs. They are messing with us – sure of it
When Tigger’s cold, he sleeps under the bed on the carpet. When he’s hot, he sleeps in the linen closet on the cool tile. The common element . . . no one can sneak up on him in either location.
Our current batch of cats actually really like their beds. Helen rouses from hers only to waddle into the kitchen or off to the litter pan. It’s shocking to me that they use them. On the other hand, despite the fact that we have $8,652 worth of cat toys, the only things they ever want to bat around are things like my contact lens case (under the sofa), hairbands (dozens under the sofa), pens and pencils (under the fridge), anything but the damn toys. Sigh.
Post its and rubber bands are popular here. Also those free catnip mice that the vet gives out! Cleaning out under a deep cabinet or appliance is always a treasure hunt!
Rubber bands sound really dangerous! Suppose they were to swallow them? (Shimshi chewed through the coiled cord that connects the telephone to the receiver and then swallowed a segment!)
Mollie is the cat who likes rubber bands and she doesn’t eat them or chew them. She bats it around like a bug. The other two aren’t interested in them. I did have a cat who chewed electrical cords. That was a nightmare. You can’t get rid of the cords.
My thought? Do you think they recognize that? Good thing they are adorable! (They use the beds in the winter. Even with a/c, it’s too hot for them most of the time.)
They are trying to show you unconditional love. Try putting an item of clothing you have already worn on the bed. At least they didn’t pee on it, which is what my cats do with new things they don’t like.
Hazel sleeps in front of the heat vents. During the winter it’s hot air and during the summer it’s cold. Right now no one likes to sit on me. Way too warm.
When my nephew was a toddler, I spent a lot of money on toys for him. He always ended up playing more with the box it came in rather than the toy. ๐
I had the same problem with toys! Mechanical or battery operated toys are t too noisy, one cat observes briefly and walks away. The other runs away as soon as it starts. Boxes, ribbons, strings, straws basically free things are what they like. Wish I had known that before I bought those toys!
I don’t buy toys. I swear they know when something has been bought and automatically reject it. The two things that have survived years of use are a satin ribbon that was on a Christmas gift 3 years ago (Morgan’s favorite) and a stuffed bunny that was given to me 20 years ago (Mollie’s favorite). Hazel just likes food.
Snorts and rolls with piggy laughter. I understand completely! Mom bought me a toddler bed. I love it. However, mom/dad’s Select Number bed is much more my style. XOXO – Bacon
P.S. I know you were wondering… I’m a 65 on the Select Number bed – ๐
She does occasionally sleep in the bed. Mostly in the winter. We have two cat beds and one is rarely in use especially in the summer. The porch tile floor is much cooler.
How long have you had cats? I must conclude that either they are terrible teachers or (my guess) you don’t learn too fast! C’mon Kate ……… they’re cats! They know all about squatters rights. They know how royalty lives. They put 2 and 2 together and convincingly come up with 22!

When that happens, you know that what you’ve got is a genuine cat.

I just buy so many cat beds that they HAVE to sleep in one because there’s no place else to sleep. That solves that! ๐

Smart cat. When my cats don’t want to be disturbed it’s definitely under the bed.

The only beds I can get my cats to sleep in are either heated by a heating pad or on top of the dryer.
Otherwise, only a heated human bolster will do.

My favorite toy was a refrigerator boxes (yes they came in cardboard boxes then). It was the best fort ever.

Hard slate is probably cool, but really, the reasons that cats do things is known only to them.
