Way back when we started the pond in 2009 I bought 8 fish. The charts said my pond could sustain up to 15 but the store talked me out of buying more.
I know why.
There are close to 40 fish in my pond. There have been losses along the way. Predators got a few. I euthanized one. At least two died of unknown reasons.
Last year I gave away quite a few. Yet I always have 40 fish.
In the past few weeks I saw several small fry. That’s baby fish. They are less than an inch. They are a protective dark color, stay deep and are hard to see.
Yesterday I saw the signs again. I have a 10” white goldfish. Very pretty but she must have been spraying her pheromones because there was a trail of suitors nipping at her butt. Ah yes, more babies to come.
I have discussed contraception with my crew. Explained about overpopulation in a pond. However, love (and lust) cannot be contained.
I cut off the wine and cheese happy hours. Stopped the romantic music yet it continues.
In nature there is a theory that overpopulation brings infertility. Can’t prove it by my pond! I have a horny crew.
Must be all those contraband Barry White albums the carp sneaks in after-hours.

Ah ha! I thought something like that was happening! I thought it was a dream.

On a cold teary morning here I hear myself giggle out loud about your horny fish. Pretty cool that they keep on keeping on though. I recall large birds with long beaks stealing all mine when I had a pond of fish.

It very much reminds me of the 70s. Anonymous hook-ups galore, leaving a trail of wreckage in their path. Or, leaving just a few blurry but happy memories…

Hmmm…I think your 70s were more fun than mine.

Your fish must recover quickly from heartbreak. I’m sure ‘Plenty of fish in the pond’ is a popular saying.

Perhaps you can call it a “cat house” and encourage those felines to do something about the surplus population!

Even when I had Jake who was an outdoor cat and top hunter, he had no interest in the fish or frogs. They think fish comes from a can with a flip top lid.

Doesn’t the cat go fishing?

None of my cats go outdoors. When I had one that did he didn’t bother with the pond. He would walk right past the frogs with maybe a sniff but no interest. He was definitely a rodent cat. Loved his mice.

Good deal! A rodent cat is a good thing to have. My cats are also inside only cats. Too many cars on our street.

In the film industry, there are flirty sets and fighting sets. You wanted to be on a flirty set. You didn’t want your spouse working on a flirty set, though. Sounds like Kate’s set is all make love not war. Lucky fishes.

I am depending on mother nature to slow these hussies down!

Haha, very cute! I love that phrase “small fry.” Was it in a song? I think that’s why I think it’s cute, maybe. Your fish are beautiful.

I do have some pretty fish that were bred in the pool. I have an all white one with red lips. Of course we call her hot lips. Then I have two other white ones with red around the mascara. None of my originals were white. They were all goldfish but 2 had white speckles. I like the blue shubunkin the best though. Love the red, white and blue coloring.

After being under ice all winter, no wonder they are a little frisky. If they had to actually raise the small fry, deal with their teenage years, and put them through college, they probably think twice!

What a wonderful place to sit and relax. Fish won’t bother you much. They aren’t very talkative and won’t leave little wet fin prints on your floor… The more the merrier! ~Elle

We haven’t had a problem with wild parties or trashing the house…at least not the frogs and fish. Occasionally the cats may throw a wild one when we are not home or at least it looks like it.

Oh yeah and those cats can shed and leave little paw prints! Fish will just smell – like company after three days! 😂

New job’s going well. Bill hasn’t sold his house yet. My friend continues to recover but is still very much impaired so I continue to offer as much of my free time to help as I can. Thanks for asking, Kate 🙂

If you want them to practice abstinence:
(1) Sit by the pond
(2) Sip a glass of wine, and
(3) Eat . . . sushi
They’ll get the message.

I have threatened sushi several times. They laugh at me.
