“What’s a cubits?” – That’s from an old funny comic routine by a disgraced comedian referring to Noah’s ark. Over the past two weeks of rain here, I’ve been wondering where those ark building plans are. Hopefully a kayak will do except for all the critters two by two. They will need their own kayak.

So what do you do when it rains? – I do the normal – complain (a lot), read, write, organize stuff, snuggle with cats and watch YouTube. I love YouTube clips. I have learned to do everything from cleaning ponds to cutting hair. I cut my bangs this week in a technique that did not result in a “bowl” look. Wahoo! I love to watch Sam Villa videos. No one in my area cuts like he does. He isn’t afraid to use a razor to get lift and do away with choppy layers.

Weeds – The other thing you do is look outside and watch the weeds go. Did you ever notice that they grow faster than anything else? When the weather breaks and I want to go out and “play,” I will really need to do yard work.

Janis, oh Janis – This week we watched a PBS show on the life of Janis Joplin. She was one of my favorites. She had a different kind of music and was a very gutsy woman when that wasn’t the norm. Looking at the hair and clothing of the times (some of which I wore) was amazing. She died in 1970 at age of 27. It was a sad story of a talented life cut short. There are too many of those.

Happy Mother’s Day – I will be expecting a nice hairball from my cats. Probably on the bed.

  1. As I read your post this morning it is raining and thundering, same thing it did yesterday… 🙂 We did get a break on Mother’s Day. When it rains I stay glued to the couch and read the Kindle or play with my laptop. I am going to check out some hair cutting videeohs. I also watch Tinykittens Livestream. Check out Tinykittens,com, you might enjoy it. You mention Janis Joplin and just a half hour ago I ordered a pair of awesome bell bottoms, now called A Lines… I am so excited. They have been out of stock in my size at the store since fall. Good Morning!

    • We had 2-1/2 weeks of rain. Way too much! It took cranky to a new level! We are having mixed weather — sunny, cloudy, drizzly all in the same day but it’s better than solid rain. Today they are predicting we will hit 70 degrees. First time in 3 weeks. It’s just been so unseasonably chilly. Hopefully it will warm up this week but they are predicting rain again for the weekend. *bangs head on table* More YouTube.

      • We have a forecast for rain for the next few days. Too wet here. Last year it was like this and we got spider mites on all our junipers and cedars. If we get spider mites you will hear my cranky all the way from Missouri!

        • I thought spider mites like it hot and dry. We get them in the front on the hollies. It’s so bad that I’m thinking of pulling them out. They are shaded by a tree and are starting to look scrappy. We get them on yews too.

          • Could be we finally caught them when it was hot and dry after the cool and wet… 🙂 The spray CH bought did the job on the mites but my junipers took a hit and I love the junipers and they are still trying to recover. I read the mites are bad in spring and fall. I think our boxwoods had them too. I think the spider mites hitched a ride to the Tiny Ten on some huecheras!!!

  4. After a couple of rainy weeks we’ve had a nice stretch of gorgeous days. Alas, this week’s forecast is more rain. Maybe I’ll use the indoor time to explore YouTube, which I never really check. I don’t think to use it as a learning resource. All this time I could have had better looking bangs!

  6. Our wicked wisteria was waving a long tendril toward the house, signaling its intention to take over tomorrow. When I wasn’t looking, lots of ivy crept up the 200 year old oak tree. Reading your blog is so much more fun than gardening.

    • I’d rather write about it than do it but it did feel good to get outside today. I am working to get rid of an invasive plant around the pond. I have vowed to not plant anything I’m not familiar with. This is the third or fourth time I had something try to take over. I love wisteria. I have always wished that I had a spot for an arbor. My mother had it and it smelled to good.

  7. Funny, I was just randomly thinking about that disgraced comedian yesterday for some reason. That album, and that skit in particular with Noah, was my introduction to him. I’m still saddened and disappointed in him. I’m not sure I can listen to any of those albums anymore.

    We came upon that Janis Joplin documentary by accident and caught most of it. Normally my wife falls asleep with these kinds of shows, but she stayed awake riveted to it. I’d like to think that Janis would have this amazing later career, particularly in her 30’s when her voice would have really come into full-throated bloom. So sad. I’m glad you remembered to mention her in your post.

    • That Noah bit was one of my favs and I could do parts of it at parties (still can). I just don’t understand how someone who has everything going for them can go so off kilter. Janis too in her own way. We finished the week by watching Steve Jobs. I didn’t think this one was as interesting as the one with Ashton Kutcher in it. Another sad soul.

  8. I missed the PBS special – I’ll have to see if I can find it somewhere to stream. I used to tell people that I was named after Janis Joplin – some even believed me, even though she would have been about 12 or 13 when I was born (some people aren’t very good at math, apparently).

  14. I’ve got “Janis: Little Girl Blue” in our Netflix Queue. It’s a new release, made in 2015:

    In this insightful portrait of 1960s rock legend Janis Joplin, private letters and interviews with her family, friends and colleagues reveal a fragile soul whose overpowering voice made her a superstar before her death from a drug overdose at age 27.

    I missed the Janis special on PBS. Surprising because we gravitate to PBS so often and I never saw it listed in the on-screen guide. Our faves right now are light-hearted murder mysteries ~ Death in Paradise, Father Brown, and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.

    We had a great week. Glorious weather ~ high 70’s, low humidity, and tons of fun in the sun. After today, the weather starts creeping back up to summer temps.

      • Many celebrities believe fame/money/accolades/applause will bring them the happiness they seek. If they reach “the top” and find they are still not happy, they get lost.

        ~> Janis Joplin, John Belushi, Amy Winehouse, Robin Williams, Jimi Hendrix, etc.

        Plus “It’s lonely at the top” ~> you don’t know who your true friends are . . . and who’s just using you to share the spotlight.

    • So far no hairball. (I’m afraid they forgot Mother’s Day! Boo!) I love PBS too. Some of the concerts are loaded with 20 minute segments of begging for donations but the Joplin special was a straight 2 hours of story, no commercials, no begging. It was really a sad story of someone who didn’t feel loved. Maybe tortured people are more talented or successful…(that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!)

  18. Shoot, I forgot to watch Janis Joplin. Maybe it will be On Demand, although I never seem to find much there except movies. I did yardwork last week so I’m good for a bit. You will have some good weed pulling after the rain. They slide right out. They got so far ahead of me, I had to resort to spraying.

    • I planted a “pretty” groundcover flower around my pond two years ago. It’s so invasive it is killing everything else. This year I will have to get it all out. Since it’s around the pond with the frogs and other wildlife I have to be cautious and it will be more work. I can’t believe how fast it spread. It should be banned in our area.

      • I have some primrose that like that. It is where I feed birds so I can’t spray. Usually something like that is impossible to pull up too. I fought catnip for years and wild strawberries, which are making a comeback. It is unending.

          • I waited until winter when everything died, mulched the area. When the strawberries grew through, I sprayed with herbicide. That’s pretty drastic, and a last resort, but it did pretty much get rid of them. Other than that, all you can do learn to love them. They say follow the vines and pull up the entire plant, and just keep doing it until you get rid of all of them. I don’t think I would live long enough for that method.

  19. We’ve got sun…so of course yesterday spent time hacking the jungle back into line. Stuff growing like crazy and one bush on steroids and about the eat the house (Kept wondering why the room was so dark – I knew there was a window in there somewhere.)
    Oh, Janis. Another piece of my heart.
    Hope you get a break with the weather.
    RC Cat hopes your cats do not disappoint. She knows how staff looks forward to little perks and souvenirs. (and she snarls no staff anywhere has permission to sell them on eBay. The very idea.) A soggy paw wave in solidarity. Cheers!

    • We woke up to glorious sunshine today! So excited. My husband is looking for his machete because the weeds have taken over. It’s like Jack and the Beanstalk without any gold. We are also not allowed to sell souvenirs on eBay (however, if anyone is interested in buying a dehydrated hairball please contact me).

  20. Janis Joplin was only 27? Wow…she looked so much older. It was that Southern Comfort I believe she drank.
    It’s still raining and you know. Stopped a bit but going again, as if Mother Nature wass on a crying jag. April showers in May, okay…we’ll live.
    Impressive you can cut your hair from a video…sigh…I need a posse of hair people to make sure I don’t look like an old Campbell Soup kid.
