Cats have many behaviors that people find amusing. My cats are no exception.

Stalking the food bowl – Mollie doesn’t just come around when I put her food down. She sneaks up on it (as if it could walk away if it sees her). She will creep up and stick her nose up to smell (damn well better be good stuff). Then she will taste; stop to savor; and then eat it. None of my other cats do that. They just chow down.

Morgan is smelling a catnip bag but she does the same thing with parts of people.

Smelling – Morgan will smell something for five minutes focusing on a fingernail or a knuckle or anything else. It’s as if she is categorizing it in her computer memory.

The centerpiece –Shy cat Hazel loves to be the centerpiece in the middle of the dining room table. (No, she’s not allowed or encouraged to go there and yes, I wash it well before visitors come. Mostly.) I have three ceramic chickens on the table (Mollie chews on silk flowers so arrangements are out) and often there are four. One chicken looks a lot like a cat napping.

  1. My cat Grendel sleeps on top of the cat food with her face in the water dish. I would think my other cat, Gent, would get frustrated and push her face in the water, but instead he will lay beside her, waiting patiently for her to move so that he can eat. I have tried moving her, but if I do, Gent just walks away. Strange relationships these cats form.

  2. We have two beautiful table-pieces. Everyone has to pretend they are not allowed there when guests come but in all honesty, we caved after a few days of having a fluffy belly flaunted at tea time.

    • Shhh! You can never admit that they are actually allowed there unless the people are equally crazy cat people who know better. “Normal” people (and I use that term loosely) think that cats contaminate surfaces with cat germs and anyone using the surface will die within minutes. Silly people.

  7. Love these photos, Kate. Our cats have been known to stalk their toys, each other, or birds and chipmunks they see through the window, but never their food bowls. Mollie must be a very discriminating foodie!

  9. We need lots of kitty vibes from you and your cats this weekend. Tiger Queenie Princess Mimi Josefina is sick and we don’t know what’s wrong with her. I fed her babyfood with fish flakes off my finger this morning :(.

  10. Love all three of these photos. Mollie’s soft and fuzzy butterscotch ears, and Morgan’s beautiful shimmer with her sweet little paws, and, of course, Hazel’s intent gaze with her lovely bright eyes. They are too much cuteness! Like a kitty beauty pageant. 🙂

  14. Ha, I’ve never seen a cat sneak up on dry food. That’s pretty funny.

    Yeah, My cats love to lie in the center of anything — freshly made bed, unmade bed, dining room table, coffee table… I think it’s so they can survey their terrain and see enemies approaching from any side with plenty of warning. Like how William the Conqueror situated Windsor Castle.

  16. Never under estimate a cat’s potential goal when being silly. I used to play with a cat, which entailed me wiggling my fingers underneath a carpet. For so long he used to look quite silly pouncing on this moving bit of carpet. It was very cute and entertaining, until he figured out that my arm was somehow involved! He leaped off the carpet and grabbed by arm….. and now he was not playing! Ray is just a little easier to “read”!

    • Yes my cats are like that. The feather toy is fun for a while and then they pounce on the arm that waves the feather. Fortunately my cats are not aggressive so there is no damage but I have had cats that weren’t so kind in the past.

  17. How funny. RC would never lower herself to eat with staff. She does clearly indicate when she wants her food brought to her on days she wishes to eat on her “patio” (window seat with window open). Vocal instructions followed by a royal stomp to location – glare at closed window – and an annoyed tap of paw indicating where bowl should be place. No. Not there – the paw is stamping HERE. “Wait – a couple of stroke with the brush before you go. Not there you idiot, Whack. Brush the fluff. Enough. Dismissed.”
    Good we think they are amusing and cute.

    • My cats have their quirks. Mostly the two older girls don’t like to be touched when they don’t want to be but want to be petted when they want to be and can be insistent. However….RC is the queen. My cats want to come for classes. They will send a list of their requirements prior so their stay is comfortable.

    • Yes. Sometimes she will stare at us through dinner although she doesn’t want our food. None of our cats eat people food except for the cooked chicken I supplement Hazel’s diet with to keep her weight down.
