Random 5 for November 29 – Cats, routines, death, smells, football

New pristine loveseat

New pristine loveseat

49 hours – The new loveseat was in the house exactly 49 hours before I heard the first sounds of a cat getting ready to barf. Fortunately I was sitting next to her. (Squeamish readers should go to next item.) I put my hand under her mouth to catch it (I know! Even I couldn’t believe I did that!). It scattered onto the carpet and some magazines. That was a close call but it’s going to happen one of these days.

Holiday stink! – Just like a day-old fire in the fireplace, I am not fond of the day-old cooking smells still permeating the house. I had to bake brownies to get rid of it. (Poor me!) So much better. (Yes, I know a candle may have worked but have you ever tried eating a candle?)

Routines – It was a busy week. Most days my peaceful morning routine was thrown out the window to get something else done. I was surprised at how cranky I started to get. Fortunately Thanksgiving morning I was able to sit with my mocha in front of my computer and start the day in a leisurely manner. Equilibrium was restored.

Bad news – No holiday goes by without at least one piece of bad news. One of our grand cats passed away unexpectedly. It was the only cat (they also have two dogs) that lived with the granddaughters and it was devastating for all.

Bouncing back – Our football team had a really bad day on Thanksgiving (really bad). The guys were despondent but rallied. A little booze helps the hurt go away…at least for sports games.

So how was your week?

  1. Your new love seat is very elegant. My kitchen is near my front door, and I cook with a fair amount of onion and garlic. No wonder I sometimes turn up my nose when I walk in the door.

We had a small Thanksgiving gathering at my sister’s house. All I had to do was cook a vegetable curry. It turned out fine, but then I warmed it up too early at my sister’s house and overcooked it.

    • This morning my kitchen smells like fried potatoes. That’s a good smell! Still trying to finish off the leftovers! We have a tradition of burning the biscuits which didn’t happen this year! Yay!

  2. I have never caught cat barf in my hand but have been known to move the whole cat at the first sound of horking or mid-horking to a tile floor. I haven’t had a cat barf on furniture… that’s the truth. I won’t say that I wouldn’t get my hand out there fast if the barf was going to land on a brand new piece of furniture. I am smitten with a kitty visitor… we have named her Sailor but I am pretty sure she belongs to the new neighbor. I worry about her, she crosses a country road to get to us. It isn’t all that busy but people drive very fast. Fingers crossed for her. So sorry about the grandcat and sorry for the granddaughters that are dealing with her passing. We had a very nice week and a wonderful Thanksgiving!

    • When I move the whole cat in a barfing incident they look at me as if to say, “you ruined the moment.” Then they stop only to barf on another carpet 2 minutes later. My next house will have a drain in the center of the floor and all things will be washable.

  3. I’m sorry about the grandcat! That is so sad.
On the humorous note of your post, I’ve caught cat puke in my hand before, too. Welcome to the club. This was kind of a lousy weekend. I’ll be glad when it’s over. I really really don’t like holidays any more. I hate the loss of my routine. Everything feels creepy without the routine. When did I become this grinch person?

  4. Busy and accomplished describes my week. Thanksgiving over and the house is now ready for Christmas. I surprised myself with that one! Who am I?
Sorry to hear about the kitty : ( Maybe Santa will bring a new one for the girls.
Babies & animals cannot be near new furniture and it should really note that on the tag.

  5. Yes, the new furniture, pillow, rug, whatever is always the best place to barf. One of our cats usually barfs right into her food bowl and I haven’t figured that out yet. Sorry to hear about your family’s feline loss. It’s always painful.
A pan of brownies can fix any problem ~ that’s my motto.
I’m so relieved that I got the Christmas decorations up today. We no longer do a tree so it’s easy now. Some garland on the fireplace mantle and a few other things around. Just enough to make it feel like Christmas.

  6. I think hockey/soccer/football players have a secret practice exercise to improve their playing skills: protecting new couches from cat “activities”. Sigh. it is so lovely (be careful to not sprain your ankle or twist your back diving between couch and cats for the next few week…you know little deters a determined cat….)
Terribly sorry about the grand cat. For such a small creature, a cat leaves a giant hole in heart and household.
Something of a crazy week with kid closing on and finally moving into a new/hopefully for a long time if not forever house (right at Thanksgiving) And realizing at the last minute it would be easier if the German wasn’t there….as the dog gets a bit nervous with fast moving changes which means getting her outside quickly and often or you’ll be sorry. Luckily it was sunny and the yard not too muddy for dog romps…and she was reclaimed before the cold, fog, and rain. RC Cat was beginning to think we had decided on a 2 dog household. It is a bit quiet now. And I managed to for once get up the Christmas lights before the cold front instead of after. Cheers!

    • There is nothing as determined as a determined cat. Someone has to christen and they are all vying for the honor. I was starting to think you were a 2-dog household. Poor Molly all by herself now. Will she miss her friend in mischief? We also got our lights up in 60-ish weather. That happens once a decade so we are good for 10 years. Bottoms up!

  7. Mother’s of catkids do strange things. I know this from experience. Burning candles is good but brownies baking is better. Again experience speaks. Sorry you lost a grandcat. Kittens are great Christmas gifts. More experience.

  8. Funny, I came downstairs this morning and smelled the still-lingering fragrance of the stock I made last night from the turkey carcass and thought “yummy”! Now, if I had cooked fish last night, I might have had a different reaction.

I once lived in a condo with easy-to-clean tile floors in most every room. My cat, of course, never barfed there, always preferring the rooms with carpet or, even better, the furniture. It’s written somewhere in the Kitty Code, I’m sure.

    • Anything new is fair game for barfing. Soups smell good the next day but I don’t like roasted meat smell whether it’s turkey (as it was in the this case) or a beef roast. I don’t know why. I love roasted foods.

  9. Don’t you know they have to christian all furniture? It’s a given. I’m sorry another kitty is gone. I know how hard it is, whether it’s yours or someone’s you know. They are such pals.
My Thanksgiving was spent quietly. I too get cranky but managed to read the day away.
    Love the Random 5 🙂

  10. I know my pets target the most expensive item in the house. It’s never the cheap rug from Lowe’s. Oh, no, it’s the super expensive wool rug from Scotland, from organic free-range sheep and woven by ancient, irascible gnomes who only accept payment in gold (or firstborn children).

Could they gnaw or mark the sofa Andy “inherited” when his neighbor died? Of course not. That would give me an excuse to buy a new one. Oooooh, but look at that brand new chair. With upholstery. It will make an excellent scratching post.

  11. I hate phone calls on holidays. It they call too early, it means someone is not coming. 😦
If they call too late, it means something happened and they weren’t able to call earlier. 😦
If they call on time, it means someone is interrupting our meal. 😦
