Random 5 for April 11 — taxes, socks, thumb, hair, Starbucks courtesy

Something’s not working here – I have been having a problem lately with socks. They creep down into my shoe. Does that mean my socks are too old and stretched out or my shoes don’t fit quite right? Does anyone know?

It’s over – Tax season is officially over for me. Everything is set to go and it’s another nine months before I will think about it. No matter how hard I try to get the “owe” and “withholding” even, it never works out that way. Oh well….

Thumbs up – Last update on my thumb (I promise). After several rehab sessions with Nurse Ratchet, it’s doing much better. I still can’t bend it properly and there is a good possibility that I never will get that functionality back. There isn’t anything I can’t do so I’m good. Last sessions are this week. Hallelujah! While not exactly painful, the sessions are uncomfortable (and we all know I’m a weenie).

Less layers!

Less layers!

That stage – I have been letting my hair grow. Not long, just to eliminate some of the layers. I forgot how painful that is. One day you wake up and it all works. The next day you realize that during the night someone came and stole your gorgeous locks and left caca in its place.

What to do, what to do – One day this week a car cut me off in the Starbucks drive through. Rudely. Almost hitting my car rude. Not only did he cut me off but when I pulled slightly forward to allow a car to get out of a parking space, he yelled at me. I smiled and pointed to the car trying to navigate out of a parked in space. He scowled and went back to his cell phone. As it turns out, he ordered a lot of stuff so they asked him to pull into a parking space. They do that for big orders to keep the line moving. He was still waiting for his (humongous) order as I pulled through, got my coffee and drove off. If you were going to order big in a drive through (around 8 in the morning when people are trying to get to work) would you cut someone off so you they had to wait while you catered your office’s breakfast?

This is what I say to discourteous people!

So how was your week?

  1. I am SO far behind on reading blogs. Don’t know how I missed this one, since I’m always happy to see your R5 posts pop up in my email notifications. Last year I decided to let my bangs grow out. I’ve always had a little bit of feathered bangs that sweep across one side, but letting them grow out was such a pain. Too long to do anything but hang in my face. They’ve finally gotten long enough that I can at least clip them back with a little hair clip (although using hair clips feels a little like an old lady pretending to be a kindergarten kid). Who cares? It keeps them out of my face, and I’ve managed to find some really cute hair clips. Sparkly ones. 🙂

    • Oooohhhh! I like sparkly! I was in an in-between stage for a while. It took 2 weeks to a month to get past the hurdle. Now I can get my side hair in back of my ears if I want. I was thinking about putting a comb in to keep them there but was afraid it was so 80s.

  2. This may be one of your most random fives, Kate! You had me laughing at the socks. I can’t think of any reason why they would all of a sudden not stay up. Have you lost weight in our ankles? Sorry the thumb may not function as well as before the surgery, but I’ll bet you adapt to that very quickly. Are you sure you weren’t tempted to use another finger at the rude guy at Starbucks?

    • I have skinny ankles but I’ve always had them. One pair of socks are older so maybe they are too stretched out but another pair is new. I think they are too thin for the shoe fit. Who knew that socks were such a complicated issue. I worked very hard to stay in my happy place while that guy was carrying on.

  3. I have literally gotten so aggravated by a drooping sock I removed it in my path! I recently switched to a sock from the mens department with a higher ankle.
Keep working on that thumb, even if it’s at home on your own. It just may surprise you!
I’m going to do a study on whether or not people act more asslike in the morning, afternoon or evening.
    Have a good week!

    • I want to hear about the results of your study. Someone suggested that maybe he was pre-coffee but then there is pre-lunch and pre-happy hour to contend with. I think there is a short window (like an hour) after someone has eaten and drunk what they want that they are actually nice. I considered buying his coffee but when I saw that he pulled into a “waiting” spot, there was no way I was paying for him to cater his office buddies.

  4. I like to wear socks (minus shoes) around the house but my brand new socks wind up slipping nearly off! You are not alone in the aging heel-loss dilemma. I do love your strange week though and so happy your thumb is on the mend.

  5. Nothing gives me greater pleasure after someone has cut me off, as to when I pass them. There’s nothing quite like that feelings when you can give them your biggest smile and wave whilst wishing them well on their journey. Depending on the circumstances there might be a “little” mumbling under my breath of obscenities but I shan’t say here as I want you to think of me as a “lady”. lol! 🙂

  6. Loved the little gas cloud at the end. Sorry about cutting you off Kate. I seriously thought you’d take it as a joke. And so your thumb has flown over the cuckoo’s nest. Sounds like your shoes want to be a Hoover vacuum. Glad your thumb is better Kate. :O)

  7. I had someone be incredibly rude to me at a grocery store this morning. For once I kept my mouth shut and just walked away, but I was thinking about it the whole ride back home. Now I read your post, and it makes me feel better. Solidarity, Sister. And do keep us informed on the thumb — how will we know if it’s fully healed????

  8. Rude socks, rude hair, rude people. What a week!

About the Star$ guy, all I can think of is that scene in Fried Green Tomatoes when the Kathy Bates character bashes her car into the young girls’ car, saying something like: “face it girls, I’m older than you are and I have more insurance than you do.” You could try something like that!

  9. I think those old socks just fall down as the elastic wears out. It’s sad when they are favorites, though. Can you think of it as a nice excuse to do more shopping?

Glad to hear that the thumb is better and you survived the torturous massage. I think texting should serve as thumb exercise, no?

Entitled, narcissistic people — like your Starbuck’s twerp — are so frustrating. No concept of other people with any needs that run contrary to their own, and of course their own needs are paramount. I have all the patience in the world for people who make a mistake and just say “sorry” and acknowledge their error, though. One woman cut ahead of me in a twisty Starbucks drive-thru line, not realizing at first that I had left space for traffic purposes. But she quickly figured it out and paid for my order, which restored my faith in humanity.

Until my errands took me to Costco later that day.

  10. About Rude Guy . . . he’s obviously NOT at his best and cheeriest until he’s had his morning coffee! 😛

Glad that your thumb is improved . . . even if it’s not back where it was.

Buy yourself some new socks and see if that solves the problem. If it doesn’t, buy yourself some new shoes. 😎

  11. Unless heel shrinkage is another manifestation of getting older (and I’m continually surprised by what the universe thinks is fun to do to us as we age), I think maybe your elastic is wearing out. I hate spending money on such practical things as socks… I usually have to buy an outfit to go with them just to make me feel better.

    • Now that’s a thought. The socks that are the worst have primary colored paw prints so I am especially sad to see them go. They are my exercise socks. Maybe a whole new exercise outfit. I wonder if they come with paw prints?

  12. I must confess, I am behind on the thumb situation, but glad to hear it’s getting better. I love this rant! Socks are a mystery to me. They vanish in other clothing after you dry them and are found weeks later and some socks fit wonderfully and others are either the inappropriate size or are not made well. I keeps socks way longer than I should and they get holes in them really fast, too. As far as the Starbucks curmudgeon ahead of you, he must have been running behind and really stressed out and as a result tried to be generous with his stress and pass it on to others 😉

  13. I hate droopy socks and toss ’em!

Sorry on the thumb – one thing about surgeons though, they always over-estimate how quickly you’ll get “back to normal.” Sometimes things are fixed but never quite “what they were” – had foot surgery 5 years ago. The estimate was normal shoes and back to work in a month; I was off work for nearly 3 months and it took another 6 to be in “normal” shoes. The surgery corrected the issue but his estimates were either lies or something else!

The rude Starbucks guy – ugh — but the perfect ending was you getting your order while he still waited – hee hee hee, Dork!

    • I had a bunion and had a similar experience. I was back to work quickly but had to keep my foot up and I wore a boot for a while. It took 6 months to get back into my old size shoe. The bummer is I still can’t wear those sexy heels!

  14. I LOVE that little fart GIF! It is the perfect response to a butt-hole! I saved it and may need to borrow it should I ever write about poop or farts again 😉

  15. I truly didn’t think I had a laugh in me this morning, but turns out I did. Thank for mooning me. Now about those socks…I believe when you wash them in the machine, this is what happens. Trying running when they droop. I’ve actually gotten so put out I’ve taken them off mid run. Hand washing, I know…it’s a pain in the ass, but they do last longer.
My taxes are also in. WHEW. and I’d keep working that thumb if I were you. I’ll just bet it will surprise you. Love the Random 5 🙂

    • Thanks. Let’s hope I don’t flunk the finals. They want my thumb to bend more but it’s not doing it. Still swollen. I always blame the socks but I really don’t know. Maybe it’s just a misfit of sock thickness to shoes. This is all too complicated.
