I can’t believe I did it again!
Today is my fifth wedding anniversary and I forgot it. I can’t believe I did it again. Every year I come fairly close to forgetting it and sometimes I have to look up the exact date. It’s not that I’m not a romantic. It’s just that getting married was more of a tidying up of housekeeping for estate management. Yeah, doesn’t sound very romantic at all.
Our commitment to each other had been made years earlier when we each kicked in our money and built a house together. I am of a generation where we don’t easily part with our dough so that was a huge commitment for me. I can tell you the exact date we moved into our house….but I have trouble remembering my wedding date.
We were married in Las Vegas. I was there for a business conference and took my spouse-to-be along. Getting married is very simple there so we thought it would be a great idea to fit it in among the seminars. The beloved husband’s four grown children came down from Denver to witness this auspicious event even though I literally had 30 minutes before my conference started.
Looking back now, I have to laugh. We were so nonchalant about it that it’s funny. I did wear a nice dress but nowhere near a formal or even dressy dress. The beloved husband wore shorts and sandals. When I met up with my colleague at the conference she said, “What’s with the dress?” Everyone was in Capri’s and pants. It was a 10 a.m. Sunday conference opening and many business people weren’t even coming in until later in the day. She couldn’t believe it when I told her we got married.
A few friends knew that we were going to get married IF the line wasn’t too long. We told family and friends not to bother trying to get there but they were intent on making this way more special than we did. My friends from Toastmasters had champagne and Waterford flute glasses sent to the hotel and my colleagues from work surprised me with a huge table of chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate truffles, other nibbles and wonderful champagne.
The kids had rented a house very near Elvis’s home and had a barbecue in the evening in our honor.
Looking back now, it was a wonderful day. Having the kids there made it special although we didn’t expect them to fly down for a weekend. The conference was wonderful and it was a great way to start a marriage.
Now if only I can remember the date!
PS: The beloved husband told me that the easiest way to remember is that it is exactly 6 months before Christmas eve. Maybe next year…..
Ha! It’s our wedding anniversary today, but we aren’t spending it together. I’d forgotten, and scheduled something else for this evening. My husband laughed. He, too, thought our anniversary was two days from now, not today!

Hey! I love the name of your blog and the picture, as well. 🙂
I’m a newly-wed, but I married my wife for her beautiful character, more so than I did her looks. (She is a knock-out, by the way.) lol But – anyway- for many marriages, it is the exact opposite. They can’t remember all the details of the wedding day – but never forget the actual date. My wife and I argued about a certain detail of the cake, and then we didn’t even get to eat any of it because we were so busy. haha
Anyway- thanks for opening a window for us all to see what happened on your special day, and I pray blessings all over your marriage, ma’am. 🙂
Thanks so much!

Happy Anniversary! I love your story, but it made me think “Weren’t they already together long before that?” Dave and I renewed our vows in Las Vegas – Elvis impersonator was our officiant 😉

Elvis huh! That sounds like something you would do.

You are a hoot! What an unusually relaxed approach to getting married, but I love it! It is great to have this little bit of background on your personality! I can imagine that your coworkers would be very surprised! Happy anniversary, and we’ll try to remember to remind you next year! 🙂 Debra
